Quick Wardrobe color question

PostSun Apr 06, 2014 6:23 pm

What color do you think I should have my talent wear to go with this room? It's like white walls and red couches.

I'm shooting this tonight, thanks a bunch!

I think more importantly, what are your characters doing in this room? Who are they? What information are you wanting to give the audience?

They are just normal people in a dialog scene. They actually get into an argument about a text message.

Gotta get deeper than that. Nobody is just a normal person in movies - you follow them because something not normal is happening to them.

Are they a couple? If you want to show division between them a simple way is to get them at different couches and perhaps use something midframe to divide them ( a lamp would be a great practical light for this purpose).

Perhaps one of them is attempting to hide something in that text message. Perhaps one of them works an office job- a light blue suit with black pants and a tie would be standard for this, maybe the other is a trophy wife - in that case designer knockoff would be appropriate, maybe in a green shade to show the money she spends. Lots of ways to go with that scenario.

The only things I'd avoid are some of the finely patterned striped suits (I just watched Wolf of Wall St. last night, and noticed some really annoying Moire - and this was a big budget movie where they made this mistake [Shot on the Alexa and I still noticed it!]), and like colors to the background or furniture (to keep your talent from blending in).

I know you are on a limited time frame, but next project consider deeply who these characters are as individuals rather than being generalized, some of the best "normal" characters turn out to be something completely different (Breaking Bad's Characters are a good example of this).

Quick and dirty - put them in cool tones to distinguish them from the background but saturated cool tones so that they don't blend into the white walls. That is if you want them to stand out.

I agree though, there's definitely thought that needs to be put in by you and the actors as to how their characters dress.

Thank you guys. I'm going to keep all of this into consideration. I really love this forum especially when it's constructive and not complaining about stupid updates. Hopefully we get some good news at the conference tomorrow! Can't wait!!

Why can't we get an update about this wardrobe color situation??!! It seems like Joe just doesn't care about all the input given to him enough to give us an update.

Although, to be fair, it is his project and his right to update us when there's more info available....

There's no right answer!!!
