They are just normal people in a dialog scene. They actually get into an argument about a text message.
Gotta get deeper than that. Nobody is just a normal person in movies - you follow them because something not normal is happening to them.
Are they a couple? If you want to show division between them a simple way is to get them at different couches and perhaps use something midframe to divide them ( a lamp would be a great practical light for this purpose).
Perhaps one of them is attempting to hide something in that text message. Perhaps one of them works an office job- a light blue suit with black pants and a tie would be standard for this, maybe the other is a trophy wife - in that case designer knockoff would be appropriate, maybe in a green shade to show the money she spends. Lots of ways to go with that scenario.
The only things I'd avoid are some of the finely patterned striped suits (I just watched Wolf of Wall St. last night, and noticed some really annoying Moire - and this was a big budget movie where they made this mistake [Shot on the Alexa and I still noticed it!]), and like colors to the background or furniture (to keep your talent from blending in).
I know you are on a limited time frame, but next project consider deeply who these characters are as individuals rather than being generalized, some of the best "normal" characters turn out to be something completely different (Breaking Bad's Characters are a good example of this).
