Feature Request: Dual Frame Guides

PostThu Oct 03, 2024 3:38 pm

Something becoming more common is the need for dual frame guides when shooting. This is usually for 16x9 and 9x19. But occasionally I’m being asked for 9x16 with 4x5 for when cropped in the instagram feed before being made full 9x16.

Now, with the 3:2 sensors and shooting open gate I’m sure there are several people that would agree it would be great to have frame guides for both 16x9 and 9x16 simultaneously on screen. The 3:2 sensors give you the best flexibility for both crop windows. So if you had guides for both you could utilize that open gate sensor to get the most of your image.

Now part of this also requires the option for 0% on the guide cropped sections since currently you can only choose 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% for darkening cropped portions. Obviously with dual frame guides you’ll have some overlap. So you mainly need the white frame guides.

In addition to multiple frame guides I would like the ability to make my own overlay, like you can on some ARRI cameras for example.

At the very least allow loading a transparent PNG made for the current resolution.

Actually, I’d prefer something similar to what Arri do with their Frame Line tool –
create up to 3 frame guides with customized aspect ratios, scaling, and alignment, exportable as an XML or PNG file.

Alternatively, a firmware update should enable an option to choose up to at least 3 frame guides concurrently.

I loved that feature on Magic Lantern.

Glad to see the support for this feature request. Keep it coming. Hopefully Blackmagic will be able to implement it via firmware in the future.

I'm going to be off line for a couple days probably. Hunkered down at my mom's for the second hurricane in two weeks. Hurricane Milton seems like it will be more devastating to my area than Helene was. And, Helene already did a good deal of damage. But I'm likely to lose power later tonight. So, I'll chime in on this thread again in a couple days when power is restored. Hopefully sooner.

And, I will let everyone know I'm alive and safe as soon as the storm has passed.

Meanwhile keep up with the support for this request. We know Blackmagic sees these and adds these requests to the queue of features to add.
