Should/does BMCC6K work with external power and no battery?

Did a shoot yesterday with a BMCC6K that isn't mine. Suspect the firmware is what came with the camera when he bought it during the sale. Camera had the internal battery and the battery grip. All three ran out and he didn't have any extras or a charger so I plugged in one of my external batteries. Bummed to discover that the camera still wouldn't turn on. Removed the batteries and grip and it still wouldn't turn on. Is this working as intended? Hope not! Is it perhaps addressed in one of the firmware updates?
