stopping while recording in raw

Hi,

My pocket 4K has been randomly stopping when recording. It happens with all different cards where it never happened before. It also seemed to stop without necessarly being too hot. If I put it in Prores LT it doesn't happen and just records for long periods no problem.

Of course I don't want to record in ProRes, i'd like to record in Raw, I used to record 5:1 or 12:1 depending.

I already spent almost 400 in repairs on this camara, I'm about fed up with it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Javier

Stopping recording or shutting down?

If it stops recording and you have the stop when dropped frames option enabled then that's your first clue. Your cards drop frames. Cheaper cards are cheaper for a reason. Also not all cards are using the same type of NAND and controllers.

Try better cards (Avoid QLC based cards).

If your camera shuts down then batteries might be an issue. Batteries drop voltage over their lifetime and you might not reach the necessary voltage needed to operate the camera if your batteries are old.

Try better batteries or plug the camera into an outlet.

Yes, it's dropping frames and stops recording. The same cards never had an issue before. Are you saying the cards are no longer working like they were before?

I cannot see on the card specs if they are TLC or not.

Can you please list the exact cards that you are using?

These cards don't seem to be supported by BM. Please refer to: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59025

First, microSD and even SD cards, even given its advertised speed never works well with RAW or even anything higher than ProRes 422 proxy or LT. That’s your first clue. There is a reason why you don’t see them in the BMD list of supported cards.

At a minimum you should look at CFast cards that does at least 380 MB/s “Sequential” write. Keyword is sequential. Read speed is irrelevant when recording. Also use cards that are recommended for better reliability.

Robert Niesser has put together a data rate calc sheet that can help you figure out what card speeds could work for you. Just remember it has to be sequential write speed.

These cards worked fine before with 12:1 (and I was even using 5.1 at 24p for a few short films) and I'm pretty sure I bought them because other people online said they worked on my camera. I recorded vídeos for youtube with these cards for almost 3 years.

Maybe they stopped working the same with the blackmagic software upgrade. I don't know but they did work before and now they don't work reliably with braw.

Nonethless I can buy better ones if that solves the issue. There are some on the verified list (thanks for that) that are not too pricy. And I can get a CF card when I can afford it but they are quit pricy.

Thanks all.

Careful about that “CF” card when you’re shopping. CF was the short form for Compact Flash cards often used in photography cameras. Now the newest media cards are CFexpress but they’re not used in the BMPCC4K. You’ll be wanting to buy Cfast2 cards.

You likely know all this (apologies) but the one chance in a thousand that someone would mistakenly order a CF (compact flash) card will now be avoided.

Thanks, I'll always check the official list now that Ruben posted above.
