Hello,

I encountered an issue when using the app and I was hoping someone could explain what happened. I am new to using this particular app but I've been using third party apps with various iPhones for twelve years.

I shot with the shutter angle locked, stabilization in cinematic mode using an anamorphic lens. I've read in other posts that there are known issues when the stabilization is in cinematic and extreme modes which is why I mention this. I set the exposure, hit record and the image went from one exposure (usable) to grossly-over exposed. I didn't notice this at the time but the rest of the footage I shot on this day was the same.

My question is does anyone know what setting I might have had on or off, or set incorrectly would cause this issue? It's made me reluctant to use the app since which is a shame as it is quite lovely.

Are you on the latest iOS version?

My phone is set to automatic updates so I usually am. As I shot this on June 11 2024 I have no way of knowing for sure if I was up to date on the day.

Any idea what setting might have been off? Or was there a prior known issue that updates addressed?

I have the same phone as you and am not actually sure it can run the very latest iOS version. I'm running iOS 17.71 (I updated today, the most recent version available for this phone), and the latest version for newer phones is 18.1.

EDIT: I take that back, it looks like I can upgrade to iOS 18, I just didn't see that option initially in Software Update on my phone.

I am installing 18.1 as I type this. Again, my issue occurred in June and my concern is what caused this problem that made all of my footage unusable. If anyone has any insight as to how to prevent this from happening again I am all ears, otherwise I'll just use software I know that doesn't do this.

You wouldn’t need to use 18, the app is fine with 17 for me.
But you may have set your phone to auto update of apps, and not the OS.
Check your version.

I guess I've not been clear - I'm not concerned with my OS now or back in June.

Did you experiment with different settings one at a time to try to isolate the problem? For example, what happens if you set the stabilization to a different mode? What happens if you don't attach the anamorphic lens? By changing one variable at a time and testing to see if the problem persists, you may be able to isolate the problem.

Many people have been using the app without experiencing the issue you showed; I doubt it's a particular setting that you enabled/disabled because I can't think of anything that would make exposure change dramatically once you hit the record button. That sounds like a bug.

The reason people are asking about whether your iOS is up to date and the app is up to date is that bugfixes in the app and/or iOS may have fixed whatever was causing the problem in the interim. If Peter Chamberlain asked about your iOS version I'd take that question seriously since he's the product manager at Blackmagic Design; he wouldn't have asked that question if the OS didn't interact with the app in some way.

Are you saying that you tried using the app in June but haven't tried again since with the same settings?

Hello, thanks for replying. I've understood why the comments about the OS have been made. If this was a bug with a previous OS I would think more people than myself would have experienced this and mentioned it. If the problem persisted regardless of the OS version I would think people would have reported it. Which is why I am assuming it was a setting of mine that caused the issue.

I've used the app since, always with trepidation, as nothing that affects exposure should have changed once I hit the record button. Even if I had allowed the app to take control of the exposure, it should have lowered the shutter angle (or ISO) not raised it. A stabilization setting affecting exposure seems like something others would have noticed and reported but given these responses that does not seem to be the case.

I have, as of yet, to experience the issue again. That being said I have not systematically gone through each of the settings in attempt to recreate/isolate the issue. Given that I have other options for capturing video that is not how I would like to use my time.

I appreciate the attempts at help, it seems as though this is not a common or well known issue and no solutions are readily available.
