NOOB: 6k camera on set monitoring

question, I have a look (LUT) that use the BMPCC 6K debayer in resolve set to [alexa logC3/logC3] and the DOP is asking on the set to be able to see the same signal.

is it possible to set the video tap in camera with similar setup? in other words, set the camera in logC3 and load the same LUT?

in alternative, which is the default LOG for the camera?

Don't think so. You can load a custom LUT into the camera, but there's no way -- at least that I know of -- to debayer to LogC in-camera before the log signal gets to the LUT.

The default log is BMD Film Gen5. The built-in LUTs are Gen5 to various display formats.

Yup. We don't get to choose the debayer in camera. It's locked based on the firmware.

As long as the camera firmware has been updated, the in camera debayer on the 6K Pocket is locked to what the Resolve menus label as color space BMD Wide Gamut Gen4/5 and gamma BMD Film Gen 5.

If the camera is running older firmware, depending on how old it is, the in camera debayer may be to the same color space BMD Wide Gamut Gen4/5 but paired with a different log gamma called BMD 6K Film Gen 4.

No, you can't directly tap into the color space of the camera.
But it is possible to go with the CST nodes and bake that into a transform LUT. Not ideal, but a workaround.

EDIT: I think only the PCC4k ever had Gen 4, all PCC6k came already with Gen 5

So, if I understood correctly:

1) in color I can do my usual debayer BRAW to logC3 and use the LogC3 lut
2) on set I need to build a lut that concatenate CST BMD Wide Gamut Gen4/5 and gamma BMD Film Gen 5 to LogC3 plus teh LogC3 lut I want to use…

Correct?

It seems a miss form BM… if i can debayer BRAW into logC3, it should also me in camera for monitoring purposes….

I think you're not debayering though?

You're asking to add a second CST into the mix, one from a different manufacturer that has built in assumptions about how the input sensor works too.

This is why you have a DIT on set....

100% correct, sir.
(*As long as the camera firmware isn't a really old version, in which case the CST input gamma would be BMD 6K Film Gen 4)

Thanks, Appreciated.

I will let client know that they have to match all to latest firmware…

If I remember correctly, it was the Blackmagic Camera 7.3 Update released in April 2021 that added BMD Film Gen 5 to the 6K Pocket. As long as the cameras are running that firmware version (or newer), you should be all set.

I'm 99.9% sure that the original Pocket 6K (not the Pro) shipped with it's log gamma as Blackmagic Pocket 6K Film Gen 4 when it was released in 2019.

Film Gen 5 was first released with the Ursa Mini Pro 12K the following year. And then not too long after that the 4K and 6K pocket cameras got it via firmware update.

You're welcome sir.

There is one other detail if you're going for an exact match between the image on set and the image in post — BRAW gamut compression is optional to turn on/off in Resolve, but it always engaged in the camera LCD image and monitoring output. The is true for all BMD cameras running firmware that uses Gen 5.

Do this instead.....

Don't Debayer to Log C, leave it as Gen 5, drop in a CST that goes from Gen 5 to LogC3 before your grade, generate a x33 Lut and it will load right up in camera.

The original Pocket 4K actually shipped with Cinema DNG, it later got Gen 4 BRAW, then Gen 5 BRAW.

The Pocket 6K shipped with Gen 4, then later Gen 5.
