BMD UC12K Custom Foam Case

PostThu Mar 20, 2025 2:18 am

I'm curious, will Blackmagic be providing the custom foam case to sell individually? If not the case, but at least the custom cut foam? I would love to buy it for when I get the UC12K body only package put together.

Yeah, I’ve got the case in my wish list. But really want to get the custom foam cutout for all the parts. Fingers crossed BMD make that available for purchase.

This is an important topic and I hope Blackmagic responds. The first thing I asked myself when I saw you could purchase the camera by itself was can I buy the Pelican case by itself too.

I hope Blackmagic sees this post and starts to offer us the Pelican case with the foam cut outs available for purchase.

I was wanting to know this too.

If not maybe Jason's cases will make one?

Glad to see others are interested in this as well. Fingers crossed BMD responds.

I mean, I have no problem ordering the case they use. It's just the Custom Cut Foam I really want.

And, I really don't want Jason Cases as those are always overpriced for what they are. And, sometimes the custom cut out isn't as good. I've had two friends regret wasting the money on Jason Cases. And, there was a third who was fine with a used C300ii he got with a Jason Case, but ended up tossing the Jason Case out because he needed to customize the case more and ended up buying a new case.

Either way, I'm most interested in the URSA Cine EVF Case Foam Cut Out as I intend to buy that Pelican and will be getting the EVF next month. Can't believe we're basically at the end of this month. Crazy.

I am of the opinion that this will not happen ...

BM gives us a stunning discount ... for the UC12K ... yet they need to maintain a difference
for those who can buy the whole enchilada ...

If they break down the price tiers then no sane person or business will pay for the package ,,,

And that will not allow them to discount the camera

Although the URSA Cine 12K LF costs more than twice the cost of the URSA Cine 12K LF Body, the whole enchilada has been thought out well and all the accessories are gathered together without any effort on our part. I think the prices of each package option are reasonable. I appreciate the effort in putting together the complete camera for under $15K and also appreciate being able to buy the Body only for under $7K and accessorize it according to one’s needs.

Re: BMD UC12K Custom Foam Case

I mean, I get the aspect of the kits having the cases with the custom foam as that's how they arrive. And, it is a very nice complete package. However, it would still be amazing to be able to get the custom cut foam for the cases since we know what exactly the cases are from Pelican.

In terms of the biggest modifications I'm going to do to the body only is I'll do the 15mm Baseplate over the double 19 & 15 one. And, I'll add a Wooden Camera Top Plate to mine. Now if that means the custom cut foam won't work I can still have the foam to make my own cutout from the Pelican I'll buy. I'm just hoping that by doing the 15mm Baseplate that it gives a little extra height so that the current foam cutout BMD does that I'd be able to keep the Wooden Camera Top Plate on with the BMD UC Top Handle. I'm positive that it will work out that way.

But I'm definitely all about buying the body only (like I did) and building my kit to my needs. It works so well. Either way, I'd love to have the foam. But the case will come with pluck out foam anyways. So I'll just customize it best I can even if I don't have opportunity to buy the nicely done foam BMD did for their cases.

I built up the exact spec as the EVF kit, but started from the body only. I believe it was $4,700 savings, and ended up with the card media module as well. It was only short the pelican case. So all in you're looking it over $5000 in extra value by building it up yourself. Possibly we are about to see something change at NAB but for the moment, I don't see anyone making the choice to buy the preassembled kit.

I order the case from Pelican without foam and designed my own custom foam layout and they made it with so much precision and quality. It was not expensive too.

Sure seems like the kits are now due for a price a major adjustment. Whole point of a kit is to save a few bucks on various bundled accessories, which typically include a few things not even needed. Having the a la carte price without unnecessary extra items 30% less than the kit just makes no sense; as far as the case, you can design a custom one right from Pelican as in the above post, or Jason cases will probably have one before too long.

Oooo!!!! I didn’t know about this! I may take advantage for a large Pelican I have that I want to make for my Nanlite Lights that I always have go out together so this may be worth doing for that as well as for the UC12K Case I’ll build. Thank you for sharing!!!

Small update: bought the Pelican 1560 Case. Did pick and pluck foam for now. As the kit may change once I can get the proper URSA Cine 15mm Baseplate.

I’m going to match the BMD Custom Cut Foam design the best I can.

Quick follow up with where I am at with my pick and pluck foam case. As can be seen by the image I’ve got the camera rigged with Wooden Camera Top Plate, UC Top Handle, UM 15mm Shoulder Mount, PL Mount, and B Mount Battery Plate fitted into the case alongside the EVF, EVF Mounting Bracket, and EVF Extension.

I’m likely going to expand more cutouts for Power Supply and other accessories. However, this is where I am at for the main unit gear.

Here’s my custom cut foam on a Pelican 1650. I’m using the UMP46K G2 which when I took this photo is all rigged for a shoot but the camera and all those attachments goes in the case. The camera mold should be able to fit the new URSAs including the UC12K easily.

The foam was cut by Pelican based on the drawing and spec I sent to them.

Re: BMD UC12K Custom Foam Case

Yeah, I had a Pelican 1650 for the UM4.6K and then UMPG2 as well. But I rarely used it because it was too big and too heavy. So I bought a smaller Apache Case equivalent to a 1510 Pelican and separated all the kit out into smaller cases. I’ve now repurposed that 1650 for a lighting kit case to house 3 Lights.

Just remember that the URSA Cine 12K body is bigger than the URSA Mini body. It’s longer, and a bit wider. So it may not fit perfectly it your foam is cut to the UMP body.

Image
Here’s the finished case now that I made cut outs for the antenna, EVF cables, power supply, and EVF Chimera that came with kit. There’s a little room for more. I also have a zip lock bag for now to put the rubber body caps to I/O ports once I start the shoot day.
