I Love BRAW but not for everything

PostSun Apr 06, 2025 5:52 am

I absolutely adore my Bmpcc6kPro and have gotten wonderful use out of it. In the next year or two, I may upgrade but I'm saddened by the fact that I might end up leaving BMD cameras if my only recording option for every project is BRAW.

I'm thrilled at the latest sensor technology which allows RAW scaling. Nevertheless, there are certain instances where I don't need to shoot a RAW codec, and the space requirements are a hindrance. Taking the time to transcode everything can be exhausting, especially when I just want to shoot a quick video here and there.

I'm not sure why BMD has forsaken ProRes, but there must be some compressed, 10-bit codec that can work. I'm happy to pay an additional license fee to unlock such a feature on the cameras. H265 seems like an ideal option. Hell, the new cameras can already record h264 proxies so simply allowing those to be recorded in 4k would still be helpful. Yes, at the end of the day, I'll probably use BRAW for most things. But it seems so silly that I would feel the need to keep a cheap mirrorless camera on hand for those times when I just need to save some space.

I know I'm not the first person to say this. I know I won't be the last. But as I'm currently marveling at the amazing quality of the Pyxis 12k, I'm saddened to think that I may end up going with something like a Red Komodo X instead, largely because I don't want to be forced to only shoot RAW (ironically, this was a complaint I had with RED themselves for a number of years). For a certain kind of customer, this is a needlessly self-inflicted wound.
