The Leopard/Il GattoPardo

PostThu Apr 10, 2025 6:45 pm

Just finished watching the Netflix series The Leopard/Il GattoPardo:

What a wonderful series this was; The casting, acting, writing, directing, and the cinematography, all of it was very beautifully made.

I can see that it was shot with anamorphic lenses, but I haven't been able to dig up any other tech information. Any idea of what camera this was shot with, or other information?

The Leopard/Il GattoPardo

My guess is The Leopard II 2025 was shot on an ARRI, possibly ARRI Alexa 65, since it uses Codex digital recording according to IMDB.

However that might not be correct given this information from dvdcompare.net re the original film of The Leopard 2013:
The film was shot in Super Technirama 70 format in which 35mm film was run through a camera sideways (like VistaVision) with an eight-perf width made wider with anamorphic lenses. The 2.55:1 image was then blown up to 70mm and cropped to 2.20:1 while the 35mm Cinemascope-compatible prints were cropped to 2.35:1. The 2013 Italian and 2018 German Blu-rays feature a newer scan of the film exposing the entire width of the frame.

Hey Rick,
Thanks for that information. I'm not aware of those other productions in 2013.

I do know that the first film was made in 1963, I believe, starring Alain Delon, Burt Lancaster and Claudia Cardinale.

Since posting this, I watched "The Making of The Leopard". In some scenes, it showed that the camera was indeed an Arri, but I was unable to see which model.

Interesting that the BTS doesn’t consider the technical aspects of making the latest version ofThe Leopard. For us the camera is important to give recognition. ARRI still seems to dominate big productions and many smaller productions but this could be changing over the next few years with the availability of the Cine 12K and Cine 17K.
