Original Pocket cam and 14-42 lumix power zoom

PostThu May 01, 2025 9:03 am

Can someone please assist with a query?

I have couple of 4k cinemas (original) but Ive just bought a used pocket for portability.

I would like to know if anyone uses the Panansonic 14-42 powerzoon IOS lens? Im reading the odd report of the zoom getting stuck on the pancake model with these? Also how does one add an ND Filter to a power zoom?

I have a later one for mine which works well with no issues. I don’t use it much due to its slightly softer image, unfortunately I have never managed to find an ND filter to fit it!

Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply - Im just awaiting delivery of this camera . it seemed like a good all round lens that isn't too big for on the hoof filming....any lens recommendations?

Hi,

In order of purchase:
LUMIX 12—35 2.8 very sharp,
LUMIX 20 1.7 sharper,
LUMIX 45—150 4.0—5.6 very sharpish,
LUMIX 14—42 3.5—5.6 slightly soft in comparison.

I got the pancake for the same reasons that you state, but have not really used it that much. Due to its power zoom and power focus making the already dodgy battery life on the Pockect OG reduced even more from 45 mins to around 30mins. 37mm NDs are or were (not looked recently) like Hen's teeth as well.

Okay when putting the kit away I did notice that at some point I managed to get a 37mm vari ND from somewhere (probably China). So there not quite Hen's Teeth.

I like the 12-35; it's a good range of focal lengths and the rendering on the Pocket is quite pleasing (it looks a lot more harsh on the BMPCC 4K from the footage I've seen), plus the 58mm filters are easy to find. It's not super small, but the versatility and image quality make up for it. Don't forget that you need an IR cut filter in addition to ND filter; the IRND filters I've tried don't cut infrared enough and you can get IR pollution in your footage that will be next to impossible to fix in post.

The OIS on that lens is sort of effective; I've had my best luck with it for static handheld shots or very slow panning, but I normally use a tripod and turn off the OIS. The OIS will further drain your battery. I've never gotten more than 15 minutes of battery time on mine, no matter what batteries I use (even the newest Nikon ones or the knock-offs).

Ah, maybe it was 37mm IR Cut filters that I could not find! I have them on all the others.

Hi Steve
Wouldn't an ND Filter just fall off when you activate zoom on the pancake? or does it screw within the zoom part? im confused about this....
