Its official: the end is finally here!

PostFri Nov 02, 2012 5:12 pm

GoPro + Red + BMD turned this world upside down in the last few days. Technology has been around for ages now, but Canon and Sony decided to not release it so they can profit at our expense. Now, their own existence is at a lonely crossroad because of bad business decisions. Like it should be.
You think I am overstating? I think I am actually understating! They may actually already be dead! Red just shot them in the head with a shotgun last night! I am not sure they will actually survive to be honest!

The game Sony and Canon have played for so many years is finally over. They can either release the technology or join other companies that went bankrupt and forgotten over night. Mark my words. If their executives do not have a major change of consciousness (= better business strategies) before December 21st of this year, their end will be inevitable and short coming.

What will be the result of this? It will be less than a year before 85+% of the market is shooting proress or better as the affordable standard. Like it should be. Current crappy codecs are a scam and we know it. We are guilty as charged for using them everyday when we know there is better but we do not demand it with our choices of purchase.

BMD + Red + GoPro are true examples that if you can release the best technology you can produce at the best price you can manufacture and still profit, then you have a logical and ethical business practice that will inevitably succeed.

The end is here. It will be a bitter end for many, it will be a beautiful beginning for many. The difference to each one of us will be in our consciousness. I want to be on the bright side and I ask Sony, Canon and you to join.

How? Wait six months. Do not buy cameras with crappy codecs in the mean time. Ask for Proress or better. Be vocal in outlets like this. Dont cry if Canon and Sony die, but applaud BMD + GoPro & Red for showing us that every end marks a new beginning.

Bashing SONY and Canon?

Amazing.

Sony has been innovative and led the way in technological advancements for over 60 years..
They make fantastic products. And canon, well, even bmcc started out with a canon mount camera, lol.

Sorry to bust your bubble about "the future" but I can shoot on sony and canon cameras today... oh wait just got back from a shoot with an amazing fs-700, today, not tomorrow.
Will be ordering from r3d now to supplement our business due to the lowering of prices, and may lock in an F5 once they are on the street, fs-700 at a minimum.
And if/when bmcc hits the market, would love to see if they would fit our needs.

Whats with the mad Chicken Little sky is falling nonsense? Are you really oblivious to the fact that bmcc is struggling to get their ONE camera to market.. SONY and canon are selling gear all day, every day.

We're going on 10 years that Micheal Mann shot Collateral on Vipers and Sony F900s.

Sony was a huge part of the digital cinema camera (r)evolution.. far from the END of it. sheesh

if you (or anyone you know) have bought a p&s, dslr, 4/3,...from nikon, olympus, samsung, panasonic and of course sony, they most likely bought a sony sensor....sony just announced 2 cameras that prompted RED to cut the price of the epic by 50%......and a full line of (affordable, if there is such a thing) cine lenses to top things off.....sony is jamming......canon is resting on laurels and selling a lot of lenses.....

Who makes all the sensors that these new, small, manufacturers such as Red and GoPro are using? I bet some of them are coming from the same place. One of which is Sony.

I didn't hear any mention of the ARRI Alexa, the current staple of television production where does that fit in? With Sony F65? Plenty of dramatic productions using that camera as well.

I don't think they are going anywhere, anytime soon.

Any of you guys remember a company called blackberry? How about Kodak? They were giants at the top of their games weren't they? where are they today?

Those two and may others were also big parts of technology advancements, no different than Sony and Canon have been until today, that is not being questioned and never will. I love Canon glass and Sony's sensor development, specially the sensor Sony made that now sits on the Nikon D800. But what makes Canon and Sony liable for immediate self destruction is that they are not listening to clients and foreseeing the future. Red, Arri, BMD are. No question about it.

Whats funny about these times is that companies not only disappear over night, they are quickly forgotten.

Any camera that shoots a crappy codec is a crappy camera. Fact. Canon C300: Garbage. Sony F3: garbage. anything below those cameras: absolute garbage.

The fact that these cameras are expensive does not make them good cameras. That just makes them expensive cameras. A good camera is a camera that you can do proper color grading with. Anything else in the hands of a professional is incompatible with our profession.

Arri Alexa: great camera, Scarlet and above,: great cameras, F5 and above, great cameras. all else: garbage

If you like your low quality, overpriced Canon C300, Sony F3, etc, etc, well congratulations! Good for you.

Shooting mediocre codecs that we cant even do proper color grade with is an insult to human intelligence. This is not the 80's, technology is here. We should support companies that embrace technology and common sense. If we keep loving mediocrity, mediocre we will stay.

Sure! Their stock jumped 9% yesterday. Their new phone (the Blackberry 10) is said to be a real marvel. Never say never.

Sure thing! What shame for their share holders though, that it took them loosing so much money before they actually woke up!

Currently, Canon and Sony have much better technology than that available on their "pro" market. I hope they make it available, if not, I can live with just buying others. Did you know BMCD is already working on a bigger sensor? Just saying!!

I don't remember seeing that announced anywhere. Where did you get this information? I mean, besides the multitudes of wish lists and rumors..

I work around a bunch of people who to this very day swear by their Crackberry. There's no explaining brand loyalty until you lose it. ;)

...key words: "until you lose it"!
A lot of people will be pissed with their weak C300's when other manufactures come up with better options at a way lower price. Yet, will stay loyal as long as basic quality is made available. 50mbs is not basic quality, I am sorry, it looks lije s--- and you can't even do a proper grade. The fact that 50mbs, 422, is the "standard" is only a testament that things are not right. This has to change.

The comments that any camera that doesn't shoot raw, 4K, or ultra high bitrates are crap cameras is uninformed and simply not true..

50mb/s 4.2.2 is the BBC's and several US networks minimum broadcast standard.

Any camera that is evaluated and pass the BBC or other networks camera bench tests are considered professional broadcast cameras and can be used as the primary camera on any production for those networks..They are perfect for News, as well as episodic production.. and have a great image!
Take the popular BBC show "Top Gear".. they use F700/800's.. HDX 900's.. plus other many other Broadcast and film cameras..

Yes they are not "Cinema" cameras.. they don't have the latitude.. dynamic range.. or 10/12 bit space or raw recording of the RED, Arri, BMCC, and the F65/55/5..

They are not CRAP cameras.. Far from it.. Hell.. George Lucas shot "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith" with a Sony HDW F-900

The point is.. a camera is a tool.. you use the right tool for the right job.. if you are shooting youtube videos.. a camera that shoots avchd or H.264 is fine.. If you need an ENG camera.. you better get an ENG camera. if you are shooting a documentary.. Feature film.. Sports event.. Concert etc..

Exactly my point. 50mb/s 4.2.2 is the BBC's and several US networks minimum broadcast standard. This is way too low. Its garbage! This is an exact example of camera manufactures doing dirty work by expanding their power on the industry. No different than oil companies and pharmaceuticals do their nasty work in congress and else where needed.
Sure Mr. Lucas shot his movie on Sony video cameras. Have you seen it? Sute, its as icon as it gets, but the images look like s---!

I am not saying every body should shoot raw. Every one can shoot what ever they want. What I am saying is quality has to improve to match the tech available by the same brands that sell manure in boxes and call them "professional cameras".

I really dont care about having 4k if the codec you shoot with is poor. First the codecs have to offer enough to do a proper grade and then the size of the image should increase as long as the codec maintains the quality.

OR, we can keep worshiping mediocrity and laziness. No!
