Telecine with BMCC

PostWed Aug 06, 2014 6:07 pm

Hi all,

I came across a vimeo tutorial on how to do Super 8 transfers with a 5DmkII.

The forum isn't letting me post URLs but it's called "The Projector - 8mm Direct to 5Dmk2"

I know the 5D is full frame and I'll need a way to compensate for that. What I'm really worried about is exposing the sensor directly without glass. The tutorial has the 5D's exposed mirror in front of the projector with no protection and no lens. Though the results are stunning for a DIY method.

I don't wanna break anything.

I have too much film to send out to get transferred, and I don't have the money to invest in a different camera just for this. So I'd love it if folks could weigh in on the feasibility of using the BMCC with this method.

Thanks!

Can you point me at the tutorial please? I'm intrigued because I get a lot of requests for Super-8 and Standard-8 transfers but I pass them sideways to a friend who has been doing this for 25 years. However, if I can find a low cost method that maintains quality and is flicker free?

As mentioned at the beginning of the post, I can't seem to post URLs for some reason. If you go to vimeo and search "The Projector - 8mm Direct to 5Dmk2" you should be able to find it.

I think it should work. Will probably even turn out looking better than the 5D Mark 2 setup Miller used back then ;)

aerial image optical printer - I recall homemade plans for just this in a very old cira 1970's Super8 Filmmaker magazine. Same concept - project directly on the film / sensor plane. At least we don't have to backwind and try to do multiple exposure mattes in registration!

Kodachrome can be processed by the friendly folks at film restore in Saskatchewan. Though they will recommend processing it as black and white for the best chance of getting an image.

Canada, yes. The only lab still running it to my knowledge! They may do color, check their website for more details.
