Sensor dust and cleaning

PostSat Aug 25, 2012 11:30 pm

Hi this is a question for John and the BMD team. I wonder if you've run into problems with sensor dust yet. What is the best way to maintain a clean sensor with the BMC? Is it safe to use sensor swabs assuming one can be found that's small enough for the sensor? What about this brush? http://www.photosol.com/store/pc/viewPr ... category=2

Unfortunately, dealing with sensor dust is a reality all interchangeable lens digital camera users must face. I would like to be prepared to be able to clean the BMC sensor in the most effective and safest way possible. Thanks!

p.s. I know you can get away with having a dirty sensor if you never shoot with small apertures, but I don't want to be limited to shooting at only wide apertures, especially with the high native sensitivity of the BMC and personal love of deep dof.

Hi Andrew,

The sensor is sealed behind a glass IR filter so you will not be able to get to it so you only need to limit your cleaning to the glass filter.

Thanks Kristian! So sensor swabs should be fine then I guess. Still not sure if they make a small enough swab, but I'll order some and figure it out once my bmc arrives.

I'm curious about the same matter.

What type of physical access do we have for cleaning the low pass filter?

The BMCC's sensor (or rather, the protective glass sheet in front of it) is exposed whenever you remove the lens. There is no mirror as is the case with a DSLR, so the sensor cover glass is readily accessible.

A clean, hand-operated (not "canned air") camera dust blower will allow most dust to be blown off the cover glass. More-stubborn dust/dirt may require an appropriate soft/wet digital camera sensor cleaning swab. These are available from a variety of manufacturers and are not specific to the BMCC.

Thanks for the response.

I've had good results with the NRD Firefly. Strange looking beast but it works on most contaminates apart from welded dust or pollen, etc.

Here is a screen grab down the throat of the BMCC.

if Kristian, as a presenter of BMD would answer exactly when shipping will start for BMC instead of advising people how to brush the thing.. especially of the camera that nobody has.. probably the existence of the administration on the forum would be much more reasonable. Support forum without support. Very double standards. Amazing.
