I got thinking

PostWed Nov 14, 2012 9:06 pm

So now that Blackmagic has updated the HdS2 (Hyperdeck Shuttle 2) for ProRes, others have mentioned using it along side a BMCC to record ProRes proxies. This seems like a very inexpensive good idea to me. There needs to be work done on the BMCC firmware yet to allow this since there is not timecode coming out the SDI, but I'm sure that's within Blackmagic abilities. Anyway this idea got me thinking, since the HdS2 only costs around $330, you would think adding a second SSD recording bay to a future BMCC wouldn't be out of the question or even that expensive. Each drive could be have different codec, bitrates, and resolutions assigned to them. You could record full res RAW on one and a lesser quality 1080 proxy on the other, mirror ProRes on both for redundant recording, or turn off mirroring and simply use each bay as a way to continuously recording forever (as long as you have enough SSD's). I think this should be a must have feature in the next BMCC.

Yes that works but takes time depending on you computer specs. Realtime onboard proxy or redundant recording would be a great feature.

TC is coming out over the HD-SDI. It's embedded in the SDI stream.

If it's "free run" it won't work to trigger the HdS2. It needs to be "record run". Last I heard Kholi couldn't get it to work.

It would also need to have Record ON and Record OFF commands in the HD-SDI stream and the ability to adjust for any offsets in the stream should they be encountered. File naming would need to be consistent, any user entered metadata on the camera would need to stream over the HD-SDI for consistency, option for REC-709 LUT as well as Lite versions of either Pro Res or DNxHD (36 for example).
