Lanc (Manfrotto) + BMPCC + Lumix zoomlenses

PostSat Jan 03, 2015 2:10 pm

When I attach my Manfrotto 521PRO to the BMPCC, with Lumix 12-35 zoom, I was exp... hoping that all functions would be available:
start/stop recording, zoom in/out, focus, autofocus.

Unfortunately, only start/stop works and not even 100%. Sometimes the camera simply doesn't respond when I push the button.
A pity, because I really like to work with the BMPCC on a FigRig (Manfrotto 595B).

Questions:
1. is it possible to hack the 521PRO and thus 'reprogram' it for the BMPCC? If so, where can I find instructions?
2. Is there any Lanc-device which is capable to zoom, focus, etc on the BMPCC / Lumix?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

JS

PS: searching the forums didn't bring this specific information.

Unless there is a zoom function / hook built into the BMPCC firmware, I doubt this would be possible.

The Bebob Zoe DVXL LANC controller controls focus (using zoom controller) and start/stop on My Panny/Leica lenses on the Pocket camera. Focus has a slight lag, but works.
However, remote zoom is only going towork on the three Power Zoom Panny/Olympus lenses. The 12-35 f/2.8Panny is not a power zoom lens, so there is no servo on the zoom control, if camera can not control a lens function, the LANC remote won't either.
If you want a good Pro remote zoom lens, you are going to have to spend $35K up, for one of the new Cone Servo zooms, and add a PL adapter to your camera, along with the lens' dedicated remote controller.
Otherwise one of the slower Panny or the Olympus MFT Power Zoom lens, like the Lumix 14-42 4.5/5.6 PZ does give you remote power zoom on the Bebob, do not know about the Manfrotto controller, however.
Cheers

Hi, I am using the Manfrotto Lanc that comes with a tripod handle attached... Sorry forgot the name... But I can control focus, iris, start stop on BMCC EF and BMPCC MTF (depending on lens)... The only problem is that when I put a 20m extension cable on it, which I mostly do to remote control the camera in a difficult to get to position... The reactivity of the iris is very unpredictable.

Sound like you have a bad connection on the ext. cable, either a bad connector or loose wire on the connector.

Sorry, what specific lenses do work with your Manfrotto Lanc zoom and focus controller? Is it fast enough to use it as a follow focus?

Thanks all for chiming in.
The remark about zoom-control was spot-on, I should have thought abut that.

I still hope that it's possible to focus or auto-focus with a Lanc-controller, using the BMPCC and Lumix lenses.
Yesterday I tried skating around with the camera on the Fig Rig but manually focussing was nearly impossible :(

Hi, sorry did not check the forum for a while... The zoom is not controllable, but the focus is ok for follow focus is fast enough for fashion shows... It's not super fast though... I use various Olympus and Panasonic lenses and they all do the same... On the BMCC it works with all my Canon lenses as well... Did not check yet weather it passes through a meta ones speed poster or not...

So both the Manfrotto RC and the Bebob BE-ZOE-DVXL are confirmed to work with auto focus and the BMCC?

I'm looking for a compatible autofocus LANC controller for my BMPC 4K EF and Canon L lens so this info would be very helpful!

The Manfrotto 521PRO does NOT do autofocus with BMPCC.
Unfortunately

So to join the choir:
Does the Bebob BE-ZOE-DVXL function with the BMPCC? Both autofocus, and start/stop recording?
And more specific: does it work with the BMPCC & Lumix GX Vario 12-35 / 35-100?

btw thanks Kai for the reply!

The Bebob Zoe DVXL does not "autofocus", more like you can use the "Zoom" lever to focus the lens, control the Iris and stat/stop the camera. I have not tried it with the Power Zoom Panny lenses, however, but I Have read reports from others who indicate LANC can control power zoom lenses, but in another tread, BM is quoted as no it will not? Much confussion....

Bebop sent me a mail saying that it can only start/stop. Too bad, and kudos to their quick and honest customer service.

Today I bought the Manfrotto MVR901ECLA:

Power on/off: NOT working
Autofocus: YES, but it’s not very quick (not slower though than the BMPCC’s usual speed, and my only experience is with Lumix GX Vario 12-35 & 35-100)
Manual Focus: YES, but really slow and there are no steps in speed.

(Zoom obviously not, with my lenses)

Rec start/stop: YES, no problems here.

It's way too expensive for what it can do, but I really need the remote buttons so I'm afraid it's a keeper (€190).

Same result I got with Bebob Zoe and my Panny/Leica lenses.

Now I'm confused: earlier you said the autofocus button doesn't work, and Bebop's customer service told me only start/stop is functioning, nothing else with the BMPCC.

Please enlighten us, it might save quite some money if the Bebop and Manfrotto do the same job...

PS: you're welcome Christopher, happy to do something for the Blackmagic community in return for all useful information I have gathered here.

I'm testing the MVR901ECLA with the BMPCC today, and my results are not even that good. :( My primary goal is to achieve control over manual focus, and that does not seem to be working. Autofocus yes, manual focus (via the Zoom/Focus knob) does not. Yes, the LANC is toggled to Focus mode.

Is there any possibility that this is a firmware issue? (my next step is to go out and see if the BMPCC has upgradeable firmware..)

2017 here, any other findings besides the MVR901ECLA?

I'm trying to decide between the Samyang Cine 35mm and the Canon 35mm. The samyang has the nice gearing for follow focus but the canon has the autofocus which would be useful for vlogging (don't need continuous focus). The Manfrotto seems pretty expensive at $225 just for push button focus.
