UltraStudio Mini Monitor?

The UltraStudio is for converting the signal out of a Thunderbolt port on a Mac to HD-SDI or HDMI. As far as I know it won't work on the output of the BMCC.

Alphatron EVF lists "HDMI-to-HDSDI Conversion Out" not sure if it does the oposite. I've not tested mine.

(I'm a bit confused. What is the actual purpose of the UltraStudio Mini Monitor then? Don't most Macs have a HDMI-out anyways? Why would BM develop a 100$-adaptor that doesn't work on their flagship product? Or is the main purpose thunderbolt to HD-SDI for the Mac people? Many questions....................... )

The built in HDMI on a MacBook Pro is an 8-bit output for the desktop. This is not the same as the 10-bit video output for an NLE, which is the purpose of the Mini Monitor.

To convert the HD-SDI output of the BMCC to HDMI to use a cheaper monitor you could use a Blackmagic battery converter (http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/batteryconverters/)

Yeah, sorry it converts HDMI to SDI - got it wrong.
I'm all PC - no Mac around, so I don't have any TB experience - but I doubt it can be done that way.

The output is not an HDMI signal and it's not the same as the a Thunderbolt port on a Mac as it's not sending out a display signal.

The Thunderbolt port on the camera is for the following (from page 29 of the manual):
When connected to a Mac OS X computer with Thunderbolt technology, your Blackmagic Cinema Camera can be used as a powerful solution for video capture, waveform monitoring and color correction. Video Capture

Color Correction
DaVinci Resolve 9 can directly capture video from the Thunderbolt port of your Blackmagic Cinema Camera. However if you are shooting RAW 2.5K Film, it would be best to take the SSD out of the camera and connect it directly to your computer to retain all quality of the original video.

As Nick said, the built Thunderbolt port on the Mac is an 8-bit output for the desktop. The Mini Monitor is a playback device for broadcast monitoring from you NLE.

Hate to rez an old thread, but has anyone:

1. Found a more cost effective HD/SDI to HDMI solution

or

2. Found 100% if the Thunderbolt out can't be used for monitoring services.


I'm kind of an EVF guy, and I love em. But I'd hate to spend $300 on a converter to use for my $500 EVF.

Unfortunately I do not yet own the BMCC but I just purchased this one.

Also, you can get it without the scopes (waveform, RGB Parade, Vectorscope) for a couple hundred less. It has HDMI and HD-SDI in & out, may be worth looking into.
