GH2 photography & stop-gap purchase?

PostSun Dec 16, 2012 8:00 pm

Hi,

My plan is to get the MFT mount version of the Cinema Camera sometime in 2013 when available but would quite like a stills camera which could shoot video in the meantime. This being the case, I'm toying with the idea of getting a Panasonic GH2 on the basis that it could fulfill these requirements and with it also being MFT mount, I could use the same lenses with both (albeit manual-only on the BCC). Part of the reason for this is the very appealing price ($499 in USA) of the GH2 right now. Does this sound like a decent idea or am I being silly?

Given I'm based in the UK, I realise I'd have to pay taxes but that still makes it considerably cheaper than it's available here, I think.

I'd love to hear some thoughts from the knowledgable people of this forum!

Thanks.

Sounds reasonable. Remember tho that any electronically controlled MFT lens will not work on the BMCC, even manually, as there is no way to power them. Full manual lenses like the Voigtlander would be fine.

I was thinking the same thing, Norliss, but then I considered maybe buy a couple lenses instead and just remain patient.

I already did this. A hacked GH2 will deliver some very nice results and the lenses will work with the BMCC. Also the GH2 will be a nice 2nd camera. Most everyone wants the BMCC because of the 10 bit RAW images but most of us will be challenged to get the workflow going smoothly for a while. The GH2 will suffice until these bugs are worked out.

Do you have to pay for the hack or is it freeware?

It's free. Obviously, discussion of the GH2 is off-topic for a BMD forum, but see:

Maybe this thread should be moved to the Off Topic area here? Cheers.

Yeah, personally I would have started this conversation in the off topic section. Thanks for the answer, Peter.
