I guess the ideal lens would be like 12-60 mm but I don't think such a glass exist.

Sorry, I have no first hand experience with that, I would probably not use a 8mm anyway, since it is too wide for my taste. Even 12mm I find extremely wide.

Personally I think, with glass that wide, you should not move the camera, nor have it at any angle besides horizontal and stay away 20 ft from humans, cars and animals.

But that's just a matter of personal style and taste - to each his own.

I guess you're not a Kubrick fan. He often used a 14mm (on Super 35). That would be around 9mm on the BMCC.

Cheers.

Lenses I have that work.
Sigma 30mm F1.4
Canon EF 50mm F1.8 mark 1

Rokinon 14mm T3.1 Cine lens is manual and works perfectly.

Lenses I have that do not work..
and as reported the Canon EF 17-40 F4 L
the Canon EF 20-35mm F3.5-4.5

Hi Adam: You might add the Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM rectilinear zoom lens. As noted above, several users report it works well with the BMCC.

And thanks for keeping the list up-to-date. Cheers.

Hi Peter,

Yes I've tried it and i works fine. I also tried the Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 lense and had to zoom in to get rid of the black edges so it ended up being the same as 10mm. - More or less :-)
I think it was just over 9mm I had to zoom in (in scope) to get rid of the black edges.

Thanks alx.
Do you consider the quality equal between the two Sigmas?
No back focus issue?
I think 8 mm is to wide anyway so I can settle with 10.

Peter

Hi Alx, do you happen to know if the rear slots on the Canon 14mm can be used for ND filtering? Or do you need to use a matt box?

UNBELIEVABLE THAT A EF LENS 24-70mm T2.8 lens does not work on this camera (IE: NO IRIS ADJUSTMENT).

You kidding me? May as well put a PL mount on it and by some CHEAP Super 16mm glass, which is now readily affordable most people/cameras have moved away from a sensor this size.

May I add, that this lens is probably one of the most common Canon Zooms in the photography and cinema industry?

well, it's not a current lens and it's a bit of a pig if you ask me. The 70-200 2.8 is their most popular lens I believe. Definitely if you include all it's iterations!

Just got a Canon 24-70 2.8 v1
Aperture works perfectly but I have infinity and/or back focus problems... Is it normal?

1) If I rotate the wheel all clockwise towards infinity I am out of focus and need to go back a little to get focus

2) If I zoom in, set focus, and zoom back.. I loose focus

Are these behaviours normal?
Is it a lens problem?
Or is it a lens-compatibilty (with BMPC) problem?

thanks, Marcello

Both are normal.

Still photo zoom lenses are not parfocal. In other words, they all behave exactly as you have found -- they do not hold focus when zooming.

To get proper back focus adjustment and parfocal zooming requires cinema zoom lens. It used to be that you'd have to spend over $30K for them, but many lens manufactures are now releasing parfocal zooms for super35mm sensors that are in the $4K to $10K range. Check out the latest lightweight cinema zooms from Angenieuz, Zeiss and Fujinon.

Thanks...

With 24-105mm f4 I didn't have this problem though.
Also the infinite problem is normal?
VIDEO lenses (not only cinema.. but built in lenses on normal cheap cameras) also work fine in keeping focus no?

Yes, but the camera itself is likely adjusting the focus as the photo or inexpensive video lens zooms so the lens appears to be parfocal.

Yes, video cameras with continuous auto focus auto correct the zoom to keep it in focus.

I had been using 24-105 on BMPC that has no active AF control on the lens and zooming "all in", setting focus, and zooming all-out.. was always keeping focus. Now with this 24-70 it doesn't work. So this means, if I understand right, that 24-105mm F4 is parafocal while 24-70 f2,8 is not.. correct?

ALso the infinite problem (twisting focus all right is out of ofcus to infinite and need to go back a little left) is it normal?

I called Canon and they told me IT SHOULD NOT DO IT.... So 24-70 2,8 SHOULD NOT loose focus zooming out!
getting crazy here!

So, if Canin says it should stay in focus, send it back to them and get it fixed!
Yes, many DSLR autofocus lenses that focus by wire, can go past inf, or just keep turning with no stops.
A few mechanical focus still camera lenses do this also. My Veydra Mini Primes can be set just past inf. point also. More expensive manual still and Cine lenses do not do this.
Cheers

The point is that I cam across some USED lenses (24-70 f2.8) and was testing them with my BMCP deciding of to keep them (and pay them) or not. I can't get them repaired myself. IF is to do so.. it will be the seller's job.
