create quicktime container with DNG?

Hi,

i noticed that FCP X supports DNG, but only as stills and it's super tedious to sort of interpret these as an image sequence since there's no native support for image sequences in FCP X.

The question is: is it possible to convert the DNG sequence to a quick time with no quality loss (preferably containing a proxy that FCPX understands)? These files could then be used for editing in FCP X without having to manually puzzle together these image sequences.

Have you considered the option of using DaVinci Resolve to process the DNGs and generate any flavour of ProRes you want from ProRes 4:2:2 HQ to ProRes Proxy to use as a proxy in FCPX X for editing and then round trip back to Resolve to do your grading from the DNGs?

Another option may be that FCP X will offer direct CinemaDNG support in a future release (2013 June?) but until then... Resolve is there. As you know FCP X has put out a lot of minor releases since 10.0 but at some point there will be a FCP X 10.1 and my guess is it will support CinemaDNG given the growth of cameras using it. I know, what have I been smoking, eh?

As Rick has suggested, this is exactly what Resolve is designed to do. You can choose either to take the defaut look generated, or througha quick conversion to the LOG look of BMD FILM across the files then render out. You can also easily roundtrip from Resolve-->FCP-->Resolve for your final grade. It works seamlessly...no puzzling pieces together required.

Hi,

thanks, this sounds interesting. But will DaVinci resolve support everything I did with the footage in final cut pro? Like… What if I add a title or do a quick colour correction in FCP? How about transitions etc.

You need to think of RAW like shooting on film. there is an online and offline process.

The post process would be something like this:
- Shoot raw
Online:
- Import all clips into Resolve
- Do your first light grade (normally just applying a Rec.709 LUT to the footage)
- Export all clips as ProRes Proxy

Offline:
- Import Proxys to FCPX and do your edit.

Once you edit us locked down and ready for finishing you export an XML.

Online:
- open you Resolve project and import your XML
- grade the shots in the new timeline in Resolve
- Export masters ProRes 4444 and the XML
- Open that XML in FCPX
- it will include your transitions and titles from your original edit.
- export you final master for delivery.

You could also master from Resolve. It depends on how your titles were produced and if you did any special effects in FCPX.

This is a similar process to how you would have worked with Film and the telecine process.

I'm trying to do the same, but am struggling to get this to work as expected.
I exported ProRes proxies to FCPX, edited and then went back to Resolve 9, Conform and imported the XML, but no option to relink to the original camera files.
The check box is greyed out.
What have I missed or mucked up?

I created a number of projects in Resolve, each represent the location we shot at. I then just went to the deliver tab and exported them to FCP and made sure the match source names check box was on.
I assumed that's all I needed to do.
No?
