Black Spot / How to FIX

PostThu Jan 24, 2013 6:47 pm

I`m a proud owner of a BMCC..so also I do have a copy DaVinci Resolve 9..

I also do have a problem with the Black spot, when directing the camera into bright light or sun..

It`s quite important for everybody to know how to solve the problem, cause filming sun is quite usual.

I searched forums and google for some kind of solution how to fix this, but didn`t find any answer.

I also wrote to Blackmagic design directly, but these are the answers I got:

In regards to your issue.
There have been a few known instances of this issue when filming in extreme conditions.

The development team are aware of the situation, however i do not have a time scale to a possible solution.

Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

So then I asked for some solutionm how to fix that in Resolve 9. This was the answer:

I am sorry about this.

DaVinci Resolve had not really been designed in this manner, but from my understanding there are a couple of options:

you could try the grade out feature, you will need to select the area, isolate the affected frames, get the correct colour and attempt to grade so it is no longer visible.

Or you could try the dust buster tool to copy and past from other source, or area of the frame, to fill the gap.
This option would best if the issue is only present for a couple of seconds, if the light and black spot in present for minutes you might want to look at
some restoration software.

I hope this information helps you.

But unfortunatelly I still don`t know how to fix that. Does anybody of you have experience with it? And so to write here the path, so that EVERYBODY can find this thread and fix that issue if necessary?

THANK YOU ALL!

This means make the black spot brighter in Resolve by selecting it (so only the spot is affected) and then use Resolve to increase the brightness of the black spot until it matches the rest of the bright light source. From my experience, it may not be possible to match the light source starting from a black spot.

This means treating the black spot as though it were a speck of dust, and cloning nearby pixels over the spot to replace it. If it's only on screen for a few frames or seconds, cloning/dustbusting may work. If it's longer, it may call attention to itself by jiggling and chattering.

I would suggest tracking and cloning the black spot using Imagineer Mocha or Adobe After Effects. Tracking the spot means that the correction will lock into place, even though the camera is moving. It makes the spot removal much more seamless. Here's an example:

If you'd like to hire someone to track and remove your black spots, I have a friend who will give you a discount rate.
