Does the BMPC4K shoots raw at 2k or 1080p?

PostWed Apr 06, 2016 4:00 pm

By reading on the BM site I have the impression that the BMPC4K can only record raw at 4K resolution. But for storage needs we would like to shoot raw at a lower resolution with this camera. Is it possible? Moreover we are concerned about the crop factor (we don't have a wider lens than 18mm) while shooting at a given resolution, that's why we would like to avoid shooting with the BMCC2,5K.
So what is the crop factor of shooting 1080p raw (if existing) with the BMPC?

Thank you.

The BMPC4K only shoots 4000x2160 4K raw. It does not offer any window modes for shooting 1080 Raw. You can record 2160p and 1080p ProRes and the HD 1080p, is downscaled from the whole sensor, so no loss I. AOV between 4K Raw and 1080p recording, the camera uses the entire sensor for both. That said, the Priduction camera sensor at 22x12mm is closer to a Cine 35mm (21.2x12) format than the S35 in the Mini 4.6K camera.

Downscaling the full sensor image to get 1080 from the 4000x2160 sensor requires processing the file, and once processed -- it is no longer a "Raw" file.
Hope this helps

Thank you for the answer. That is indeed what we feared. Maybe we should shoot with the classic BMCC in 2,5K RAW then to keep flexibility in post without the hassle file size and processing.

But then, I am curious what lens people use for wide shots on the BMCC ? It is very hard to come by anything wider than 15mm or 18mm (Zeiss CP2) ... and with the BMCC's crop factor of 2,3 that doesn't help since it is like a 35mm or 41mm equivalent.

Any tips?

To get wide shots, get the MFT BMCC, then you can use the Metabones Nikon F BMCC Speed Booster and your Zeiss ZF 18mm to get around a 11.5 AOV. Also, SLR Magic sells a nice 10mm Cine lens and Veydra has both 16mm and 12mm MFT mount Cine lenses, and is working on a 9.5mm lens. Add to this the Tokina 11-16 Cine Zoom for a little choice, and if yiu get this zoom in the Nikon F mount, with the SB, yiu get a very wide zoom, 7-10mm, add a normal Nikon F to MFT adapter, and between them you are good for a 16mm to 7mm ultra wide cAOV coverage. To visualize this you can either use a Abel Cine IOS PCam app. or the Artisits Viewfinder II IOS app., which works like a directors loupe, and gives to the AOV guides for a given camera/sensor and focal length lens, using your phone/iPad camera.

Ron, for further calculations, keep in mind that when shooting raw, since the nature of it is having raw sensor data, downscaling is impossible, because to downscale it would mean the data was processed and turned into an image. So, if the BM4K was to have a raw HD option, it would just gather data enough to fill an HD resolution... and knowing the sensor size of the camera and the pixel count, you can make the calculations on your own, half the height, half the width, and a crop value to go with it.

Unfortunately the BM4K doesn't have a raw HD option, just Prores (no DNxHD option either, that's just the BMCC)

A 2K/ 2.5K/1080 RAW recording in windowed mode would have been a fantastic firmware upgrade in BMPC4K.
