Been using Canon 24-70mm v1 with intermittent success using iris control - can't replicate with any consistency (e.g., cycling through power up/down, unmount/remount
Anyone with a solution please share. Thank you.

Yes. When running on battery the IS is only engaged once the record button is pressed.

First time poster, long time listener...

I've scoured through this thread quite a bit, but i cant seem to find any information on the Canon EF 8-15mm L series. Has anybody had success with this lens and does it work properly with the camera?

Thanks

There have been recent threads showing the Tokina 11-16 focusing at infinity. The list has not been updated. Ca someone verify on this thread so that its updated?

It is working for me. I just got my BMCC last Thursday, so I assume it is one that has been "fixed".

I don't see what all the happy tidings the Tokina 11-16mm gets. In manual on my DSLR infinity focus will start at about 4 feet and there's little room left on the ring for focussing past that. It flares easily, image is poor, hunts around on auto. On the BMCC it's worse or perhaps its the bigger LCD. Its only just usable past f4 on a bright day even then I can zoom in and see its soft. How can people like this lens? Or do I have a bad one?

Well....u have a BMCC....i am still waitin for mine. Using that lens with the canon bodies (which most of us have Canon glass) was/is very pleasing. I am hoping that that translates to the BMCC. On my 7D it was very sharp for stills and pretty good on vid. ON 5D3 ...just as good (after 15.5mm). And after crop, about 28mm is usable without getting new lenses. So...yes, am excited to try it out and work with it for now. (when camera arrives)

to cut to the closer... I got the Rok cine 8, 24, 35, 85mm.

I received my BMCC a few weeks ago. I ordered in January this year, so I was lucky I guess. I had some issues with the Canon EF lenses on the BMCC, but it could have been not understanding how the Iris worked in that situation (I was outside daytime, likely needing some ND filters... in my other kit).

After working with the BMCC (been using the 5DmkII for 3 yrs.), I realized the workflow is quite different as are the equipment/rig requirements. There could be a lot more functionality built into the BMCC, for sure. Focus assist is wierd (and needing 5x zoom), iris... quirky, . I'm getting to like it more, but obviously way different than a DSLR rig. I also need to bring a big towel for my head to see the monitor outdoors.

The crop factor, iris, focus, etc. made me realize I what I've known all along. I really needed the fast Rokinon cine primes. The Canon EF zoom lenses are great for a lot of things, but fast primes with gears are essential. The BMCC really needs a fast lens, long focus and aperture controls on the lens. I bought the Rok cine 8, 24, 36 and 85mm. I held off on the 14mm as it's not as fast (and I have the wonderful Canon 16-35mm). So glad these Rok lenses are available (and that I waited). I tested the 85 and it's great. Just got the 8mm cine in the mail yesterday. My Canon 5D is gonna love them as well.

If I shoot with other 'professional' photographers, maybe I rent the Zeiss CP2's to avoid ridicule. But I will wear the shame on my sleeve proudly. These Rok's may not be game-changers like the BMCC, but I'm thrilled with the quality... at a price most can afford.

Here are two comparison videos using the Rokinon 8mm cine lens. One is the BMCC, the other is a 5D markII. I am pretty sketchy on the Rokinon 8mm. I've never gotten anything sharp out of it. With the BMCC, normal indoor lighting w/ ambient window light, I had it wide open (obviously won't yield the sharpest image. My point is more that it still wasn't enough light for the BMCC. I had to push it a lot in post and it got really grainy. Even a Resolve expert would have a tough time getting this footage to look right.

I am not getting great vibes about this camera in lower light situations. Contrastingly, my Canon 5D markII always looks great in normal indoor light, even remarkable in darker club venues. The BMCC really needs faster lenses and a lot of light to bring out the best.

As for the Rokinon 8mm, I like it for the cool drama of the lens, but longer clips you'd start to notice it's not very sharp. With the BMCC, the tendency would be to use it for a longer wide shot. Most filmmakers and photographers would not be satisfied with the image quality for something that really matters. Contrastingly, the Rokinon 85mm t/1.5 on the BMCC looked real nice... still needed more light though.

That's great thanks for reporting on those Roks. I agree, with such a severe crop factor, you lose some of the sought after qualities of these 35mm lenses. Fast and Wide to make up for it, is essential. Thus why on the GH3 and MFT, Voigtlander and SLRMagic came out with some great lenses optimized for that sensor size. I feel like the same thing needs to happen here with EF, but that's a long shot. The MFT mount will be more suitable for this sensor size.

I agree, finding lenses that look great on the EF BMCC wide open is almost impossible. I thought for a while mine needed the flange adjustment but apparently its ok. I'm realising that the BMCC is going to show any short comings of whatever you throw in front of it. Its unforgiving in that way.

Some lenses and filters that do well on a DSLR are not a match for this sensor.

My thoughts so far with what I have:

Canon 17-55mm, a pretty good all round lens that only starts to shows its shortcomings wide and at distance. Whether or not this affects the quality for close ups and medium shots... I don't know

Canon 10-22mm, Is soft from 10-12mm starts to improve from then on, can't stop down yet but it can only improve.

Canon L 70-200mm f4 IS - This lens looks very good because of its length and ability to show some nice bokeh. Haven't tried it with IS, only on a tripod, very hard to hold or touch the tripod without getting micro shakes. Worth it though... nice colour and image.

Canon EF 85mm f1.8 - This is my only prime lens and its ok, not as nice as the 17-55 or 70-200 and its not a useful length given the crop factor.

Tokina 11-16mm, this lens is a crap shoot and threw me into a tail spin thinking I had a flange issue but I definitely have a bad infinity focus problem with it. Tried adjusting the screws but its marginally better and nowhere near the canons... (ie wide open)

There's not much mention about Nikons or Leica's having the same issue. I'm not referring to the flange issue because these lenses are manual focus but more to do with softness at the wide end (if you can get there).

Lots of folk say the LCW fader or any fader ND is not a good option and this holds true on any of the above lenses I've tried it with. It definitely makes the lens softer wide open and probably at other distances.

(I'm waiting on a set of Tiffen ND's and will know the differences then)

I'm at a point where I don't know what to get for this camera. Some people are happy with some of their still lenses, some people are happy with the Roks, some are praising the Zeiss. I'm jealous of guys with a nice set of Leica's and guys with access to cine primes don't have this dilemma.

From what I can gather so far in order of quality and usefulness on the EF BMCC my list would go as follows. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts and if you agree.

1. Cine primes
2. Zeiss/Leica's/Nikons with Duclos mod. (primes)
3. Zeiss/Leica's/Nikons (primes)
3. Canon L/Nikons (primes and some zoom) I'd put the 17-55 EF-S in here.
4. Rokinon (cine) (prime)
5. Canon EF & S/Sigma's/(Tokina if you can find a good one) (primes)

The MFT mount might have some better choices not only for going wide but quality wise as well. I haven't seen any proof that this is the case yet as not many have this mount.

Hey, I'm not complaining I'm just in a dilemma as I try and move forward with this camera. Its clear to me I need some good primes but seeing as I've apparently plonked $4k down on some iffy stuff so far I want to be sure for my next spend.

any help or advice or criticism welcome I'm here to learn.

I received my BMCC a day before yesterday and verified which canon lenses are compatible with it. One of my friend runs a Canon showroom, so I have access to all the available lenses to check.

I amazed after the tests.

All canon EF / EF-S lenses are working.

With BMCC one should use EF-S lenses, as these lenses are specially made for small sensors. And of course using Canon EF-S lenses on BMCC also reduced the crop factor which is mentioned 2.3x on papers.

Many concerned about the wide angle with BMCC. Canon EF-S lenses can help them. Crop factor of BMCC (in my opinion) is less than 2.3x, if Canon EF-S lenses are used with BMCC.

I recommend Canon EF-S lenses to use with BMCC. I am using these lenses and very much satisfied with the results.

My recommendations are based on practical results.

Thanks

Let's think about a man being photographed by two photographers, one using a Canon 5D with an EF lens and one using a 7D with an EF-S lens. The EF-S image circle may or may not be smaller than the image circle of an EF lens, but a 50mm EF lens on a Canon 5D and 50mm EF-S lens (with smaller image circle) on a Canon 7D create the identical size of the physical image of the man on the different sized sensors. The photo from the 5D will show a lot more things around the man since the sensor is larger. Our angle of view on the 7D is smaller on that smaller sensor and we don't see as much in the picture but the man is the same size on the sensor. Crop factor is a quick method to indicate how much less we are seeing. If the crop factor was 2x, we see half as much of the view surrounding the man.

On Firmware 1.3 my Canon 28mm f/1.8 has aperture control again. I don't know if anyone else got that as well.

For non functioning EF lenses (on BMCC), there is a workaround.

By using Neutral Density filter and setting exposure based on lightmeter.
This method will allow camera to expose at right density...(settings on light meter has to be tested with BMCC ISO settings before taking a field trip)

Pros: Non functioning lens on BMCC can be used.
Cons: Aperture will be always fixed at full open. Hence weaker depth of field, also lenses are not at their best at full open aperture.

Firmware 1.2 adds f-stop display on the camera (among other things).

I found that, on my EF 17-40mm 1:4 L USM, while the camera is showing an f-stop change on screen when pressing the arrow buttons, that the aperture on the lens did not change.

This list was compiled as some electronic lenses were/are not working on the EF mount.

Almost any manual lens will work on the MFT mount with the correct adaptor.

If you want to use the Tokina 11-16 on the MFT mount you should get the Nikon mount version as the aperture is mechanical and can be controlled via a Nikon G to MFT adaptor.

here's a fix for the Tokina 11-16 infinity focus issue: http://blog.christianschmeer.com/resear ... djustment/

Do it at your own risk. Worked for me.

Tested with v1.4 firmware

Zeiss Distagon 2,8/15 ZE still ok
Tamron DiII SP 17-50mm F/2.8 VC works only partially with new firmware (was ok before) - Iris button does not work but if that is not touched manual adjustment is working. If Iris button is touched it breaks manual adjustment as well.

Edit. After several restarts of the camera the lens problem seems to be disappearing and the above mentioned Tamron is working as expected for iris adjustment both manually and with iris-button.
