Tim, great work on that music video!
Lovely shots and lighting. I miss my G2 sometimes.

Keep up the fantastic work!

Editing my post to include some actual footage with our BMMCC and SLR Magic APO Microprimes.

Really happy with what we’re getting so far :-)

Here's a music video that was primarily shot on the Canon C300ii, with some drone and GoPro footage, and then my URSA Mini Pro G2 as B-Cam. DZOFilm Pictor Zooms for both the C300 and my UMPG2. Edited by the director in Adobe Premiere Pro. Color Graded by me in DaVinci Resolve.

My latest short contemplative videoclip, shot in nature with a BMPCC4K, ProRes 422 4K (except a few shots 1080) 25 fps. The macro shots were taken with an old middle-format 4,5x6 lens: Bronica PE 100 mm MACRO, with 2 adapters [4,5x6 > EF] and [EF > M4/3]
Music by Hazy «Stillness».
Enjoy.

Not a commercial this time but a arty / low budget arty shoot for band Sahab I did back in December.

Full line of Blackmagic cameras :

Pocket 6K / RS3 PRO / LEICA 28mm R
Pocket 4K / vintage S16 Schneider Zoom
URSA G2 + LEICA R 50mm + 16H + Rectilux on easyrig

That Kowa 16H / Leica R combo still has its "wow factor" each time I put in use. Which I have to admit, for the last 2 years has always been "arty / low budget" shoot.
Damn you Instagram...

I have to say the Pocket 6K spherical has a super nice texture, lack a bit of DR but damn that texture / resolution is super super nice.

Context : 2 takes per song / live / no rehearsal / no knowledge of what the songs are

Tight lighing kit :
2x kit of titans,
3x1000W Bicolore china ball,
A set of Astera Bulb but not enough unfortunatly to put in every practical.

Shootout to my gaffer for his incredible reactiveness and sensibility.
Beware, lot of flickering lights !

If you like indy music that bled arabic / jazz / rock / electro

4 songs separatly :

Pop song that burst into electro / rock.

Double Drummer & saz player + the band

13 Brass players + the band & guitar solo

Ballad / lot of anamorphic + diopter

Full session :

I really liked the mixed framing/aspect during the performance.

Nathan, that was just excellent.

Enjoyed the last piece without flashing lights. The lights just didn’t help as the musicians can create a frantic mood without them, but if it’s what the band wants, so be it. Your work was superb.

Similar can be achieved with BMD cameras, I actually had Ursa Mini 4.6 as well as Bmcc OG on the set as back up. Further, I also used other BMD products on the set, Ultrastudio Mini 4K, Micro Panel...

Because I was pushing the shot to the limit and "clipping" into a shadows in order to balance lighting from the projector, I opted for ALEXA as a "safer" option, and it did not disappoint.
I was worried about noise patterns to do this with BMD, I could ve done it, but would had needed to increase light source a bit, challenge is that by introducing too much light on set, projector image will look washed out...

Hello gang. Here's my latest music video clip. I went for a B&W creation this time, but I'm not sure I did the color grading right. It seems I could have worked a little bit more contrast here. What do you think? What are your recommendations?

Also I am filming with my new OnePlus 11 phone which allows for LOG recording of video clips, but if I film in LOG then I do not know what to use in terms of Color Space Transform settings. Does anyone know what type of settings would be appropriate for LOG footage with a OnePlus 11 phone. Should I use a LUT? Which one would be the appropriate one for OnePlus 11 footage in LOG?

Thank you for your support.

Here is a 60 second promotional video for a recent concert to honour the legacy of the late Canadian singer/songwriter icon Gordon Lightfoot. This version is designed for playback on a 4K television, but it will work on other devices. I’ll upload versions for Rec.709 and sRGB at a later date.

Kindly let me know if you’re having any difficulty accessing the video as it’s a long time since I posted anything public on Vimeo which has undergone many changes since then. Thanks for testing this for me!

An installation video I made for a recent contemporary art group exhibition. Taken on a 6k and 24-105, I wanted the tighter composition rather than a wide view of the Quarries so opted for the longer end.

A music video I shot for a rock band here. On $0 budget (I wish I had a budget to work with on this to even rent some extra equipment and actual usable lights), with BMPCC 4k and Meike 32mm lens and a cheap Russian Mir-1b. This is also my first music video, and their first one too.

It is remarkable just how much image one can claw back in Resolve from footage which has been badly over-exposed, as in properly roasted. Because I was committed to other tasks at an aviation event, I sent the Ursa Mini 4.6k camera out with an inexperienced 15 yr old and her mother to pick off some images for memory sake. Her mother's shoulder was to be the camera support as there was a heavy lens on the camera. I set the shutter speed and lens aperture to what I thought might work. The sky was hard bright overcast so it was really BGOBG wishful thinking. After her mum's shoulder got sore they came back for the tripod. A proper colour-grader could probably recover more out of the image.

Hi Aaron,

I'm really impressed with how you've marketed this on social media and with how successful you've been. Your idea of breaking the documentary into short chapters is brilliant. Apart from 1.7 million views on YouTube, some of the individual chapters have millions of views on TikTok.

I'm also intrigued by your decision to name the YouTube and other social media accounts for the film, not you as the filmmaker. I gather from a comment on your YouTube Community page that you see this as a series and are working on a sequel. You appear to be having success in building an audience. Just to take Instagram, 155,000 subscribers is a hell of a start.

I've only seen a few "chapters" of the film so far, but I plan to watch all of it. It's really well done. I know some people like Alfie, and the film rings true. Love the tone and humour. I think you have the makings of a fiction feature film or TV series here.

I'm also impressed that you were able to develop the relationship you appear to have with Alfie. He's a natural. I initially wondered whether he's an actor and this is scripted.

For an international audience, good idea to subtitle Alfie's strong northern, Manchester area accent :)

I'd love to see a post in which you talk about making this film, and marketing it.

Cheers

Shot a Christian indie feature over the summer on the URSA Mini 4K and had an amazing time with it! We really tried to take the time to light the movie and I really think it helped the camera shine. The global shutter was especially useful for the last few days of the shoot where we were completely handheld, as well as for scenes where we used a camera flash to simulate the light from a shotgun blast.

We shot the film in 17 days, all of the URSA Mini stuff was shot at RAW 4:1. For glass, we had the Canon 24m-105mm. Sound was recorded in camera. Three 128GB C-Fast 2.0 cards allowed us to shoot all day as each card held 22 minutes of footage. Powered the camera and mic with two 190wH v-mount batteries. Cut, graded, mixed all in Resolve, VFX in Nuke with some help from Blender.

Here's a little teaser, everything in it was shot on the Mini 4K, save the drone shots which are Mavic 2 Zoom.

This is a life portrait of my grandfather illustrated through his love of cycling.

10 years ago I made a short documentary about my grandfather who was 80 at the time and still cycling everyday. The video got a lot of attention and was even Staff Picked by Vimeo!
This was my first proper short documentary and of course it was made with limited gear, experience and budget.

Fortunately my grandfather is still with us and very much cycling almost as often as before so I wanted to revisit this idea and create a new documentary for his 90th.
The plan was not to create a copy of the original one of course but to shoot this with a bigger crew and create a new documentary with a different angle and stronger visual style, which I think we achieved!
For this one I also wanted to include some of his brothers and friends and give the opportunity to them to express what they feel about my grandfather.

This is probably my most personal and important project to date due to how close I am to the subject but also since I was directing and not covering every single aspect of the project as I am more used to.

It was a great collaborative experience to be able to bring in talented and close friends like Alex and Clement which elevated the production value of this documentary and of course the final result.

This documentary would have not been possible without the amazing support from Artlist and Filmconvert, and would have not looked as good without the support of DZOFILM and Nanlite.

BTS and cinematography breakdown videos coming soon!

Shot on the BMPCC6K and 6K Pro in July 2023, in the South West of France.

(Earphones recommended)

Let me know if you have any questions :).

Cheers,
Flo

If you aren't already, I think that you should be talking with French television networks about broadcasting this. I think that it's really well done and that there are solid demographics for it. Your grandfather comes across as a delightful man. Given that the cinematographer, Alex Botton, lives in British Columbia, I wonder whether it's also worth talking with the CBC (Société Radio-Canada).

I watched it on YouTube and then had a look at what Vimeo did with it. On my monitor, and based on a brief look at the Vimeo version, I thought that it looked better. For one thing, the English subtitles are noticeably sharper, and I think that that affects the whole look:

I really look forward to the upcoming BTS and breakdown.

Judging from what you said about where you shot the film, and from some cues within it, your grandfather lives in one of my favourite regions of France. Given his proximity to some of the most demanding cycling in the country, he could have been a bit less self-effacing about the local cycling challenges :) Some of the best cuisine in the country, too. I have no doubt that Giselda earned her credit for "delicious food" :)

P.S. I'd sure be interested in seeing an interview about his 28 months in Algeria. He would have been there just before, or at the beginning of, the war for independence.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback on this!
We did think about approaching network or streaming platforms but not too sure how or where to start to be honest haha!

And yes it does look better on Vimeo and I always try to upload my work to both it and YT.

The BTS is live now and the Breakdown will be for next week :)

Haha yes she is amazing cook for sure and we didn't lack good meals whilst filming that's for sure!

Thanks again for taking the time to watch this.

Excellent. Well-organised insights into making a documentary film and working as a team.

Appreciate your efforts here. I’m just at the beginning of planning for a short documentary here to be shot 2024 in the Spring with an inspiring subject. Pre-COVID, I had planned a major documentary to be shot over a year, but my charming subject sadly became ill and passed away.

You will serve as my Master Class for Documentary Shorts since I figure it will be just as good as going to LA to listen to Ron Howard.

Thank you Rick!! And so sorry to hear about your subject passing away.
But I would still go to LA haha!

As promised in an earlier post, here is the link to a revised version of the Legacy of Lightfoot 60 second promo graded for Internet viewing, sRGB.

And here is the revised version for 4KTV HDR PQ.

I have a few observations Rick. I'll just put it into the context of how I do it rather than saying this is how you should do it. Device agnostic; between Vimeo and YouTube, HDR is tricky enough without confusing the viewer any more than necessary. And to a point, it *is* necessary to do exactly that. For example, YouTube 8K HDR doesn't work with M.S. Edge but does work with Google Chrome. On the other hand, 4K HDR is fine with M.S. Edge. And you can never know if a Windows user is aware that he has to enable HDR in the Settings>System>Display.

Overall, I think both YouTube and Vimeo do this poorly. YouTube will create an SDR copy from your HDR upload but it's not as good as if your SDR creation was made with a clean sheet of paper. And it's a little better about communicating stats for nerds. Of course, the matter of ads is something you can't control so there is no question Vimeo holds this advantage. With YouTube, if you don't like the SDR copy they generated from your HDR upload, you can re-upload it with a lut attached showing how the SDR should look. But both systems remain frustrating for HDR. With your Vimeo HDR, I had to switch to Google Chrome to get it to play in true HDR but Vimeo's workaround is to require individual HDR and SDR versions.

In my opinion, the SDR version, whether generated by YouTube or separately for Vimeo is the more important version because that's the copy that more people have the supporting hardware for. So a bad SDR conversion by YouTube is devastating. But what I have learned from doing HDR now for 9 yrs, and from the beginnings of YouTube supported HDR, is that if I upload a really proper HDR upload to YouTube, the better it's automated SDR copy will be generated. And by "proper" this can often be thought of as another word for "average." In other words pushing the boundaries of highlights, RGB endpoints and saturation more conservatively. Kind of a shame when you really want to make HDR really "pop," so it's better if the source itself contains the pop and not the HDR grade. Because in the early explanations, HDR was thought of as a way to emphasize specular highlights, not create an overall brighter picture, the general contrast was to remain the same. But people wanted to see what it could be if the volume knob was turned up to eleven, and so with the wider gamut and color volume, colors could become quite garish and bleed over.

I've shot concert venues and Trace Bundy for TedX, and recognize some of the same issues I saw in your Lightfoot, notably the multicolored stage lights, all the colors of the rainbow, so what of skintones? And in my grades I concluded it was better not to overemphasize, strong colors that serve to emphasize chromatic aberrations, tinted skin tones. They are going to shine through with no help needed. So I look at the CIE chromacity to make sure my outliers fall within the boundaries. For SDR, I grade to one standard, 709 color and 2.4 gamma, otherwise known as BT.1886. And for HDR, I grade to one standard, 2020 color and ST.2084, but I limit gamut to P3-D65 within the 2020 container. I know that if I do that, my videos look right on every device, phones, tablets, flat screens without asking as much of the viewer; pc or tv? PC or Apple? Galaxy or iPhone? HDR or SDR?

Excellent information Tom. When I started using HDR PQ ST2084, I still uploaded separate Rec.709 and sRGB versions for the SDR clients. Now I’ve started to do separate grading in Resolve for both HDR PQ and SDR sRGB by using two branches for the node tree. For a particular grade I just connect the start point and the end point to the node branch that is to performed. So it keeps everything in one place. Based on your comments, I should add a branch for SDR Rec.709 too.

I only live in an Apple Safari and Vimeo world re browsers for creating my videos so many thanks for the information regarding other browsers and Windows. My clients likely use Windows and other browsers and this week a client requested something for Facebook other than my standard grading which helped me realize I need to offer more options to my clients rather than rely on PQ only. The client is happy with the sRGB grade I did yesterday.

Speaking of legacy, last week Lightfoot's band, which includes musicians who worked with him from the beginning, announced that it's going on tour. Gordon Lightfoot's friend Andy Mauck has joined on vocals.

Website, just up, for The Lightfoot Band: https://thelightfootband.com

Their first show will be next month at Toronto's El Mocambo (https://elmocambo.com).

For those unfamiliar with Lightfoot, this BBC concert, recorded in 1971 in an intimate space, is a good place to start. There's a playlist in the Description, concluding with Canadian Railroad Trilogy at 57:30. Rick Haynes is on bass, and Red Shea on lead guitar. Shea has since died, but Haynes is part of the new band.

This show was part of Stanley Dorfman's BBC series In Concert, an historically important programme that's discussed in detail in his Wikipedia entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Dorfman
