sRGB and 709 share the same primaries and white point but a slight variation on gamma. sRGB is customary for print and photos and games, usually 8 bit. 709 is for HD movies, webcams.

Rec. 709 specifies a non-linear OETF (opto-electrical transfer function) known as the "camera gamma" and which describes how HDTV cameras encodes the linear scene light into a non-linear electrical signal value. Rec. 709 doesn't specify how the companion HD decoding should occur, known as display EOTF (electro-optical transfer function), that describes how HDTV displays should convert the non-linear electrical signal back into linear displayed light. That was done in ITU-R BT.1886, using 2.4 power gamma same as sRGB. Since you want your encoded gamma, primaries and white point to match the decoded EOTF of HDTV displays (and sRGB), working with 709 2.4 gamma accomplishes both, you don't need separate output grades for sRGB.

Thanks again, Tom. I’ll setup branches in the node tree then for SDR Rec.709 BT.1886 and one for HDR PQ. I didn’t understand what was behind 709 and 1886, but now I get it. I knew sRGB was close to .709 but not the details.

Rick, back in 2014 I became aware of HDR in DaVinci Resolve, around version 15 I think. At that time it didn't even include HDR scopes or a way of monitoring HDR, at least I didn't. I would encode a few frames in HDR on my laptop, transfer it to a USB flash stick, plug that into my HDR capable 4k television for playout, and go back and forth adjusting everything until it looked as I wanted it. That parlayed into a small job to take a little film short that had been shot by someone else with a Canon 5D as a series of tiff images, and some with a Red Epic. I finished it in HDR, Sony bought the rights and the little short played around the globe in Magnolia HiFi Showrooms everywhere on Sony Z Bravias in 4K HDR for almost a year! Anyway, fame aside it has only gotten so much easier, the tools in Resolve Studio, 4K HDR monitoring with Decklink, it's the only way to go for HDR, at least for me.

I'm sure others have discovered this technique before it occurred to me recently, but in case it's useful to anyone, here's my first attempt:

A long-exposure still image on track 1, with a slow motion video clip of the same scene layered on top on track 2. In Davinci I also did a slight (5%) in-between scaling/zoom. Shot in 4K UHD with my old Olympus E-M10 M3 camera and 12-40mm f2.8 lens. Location is Marshall Park, Portland, Oregon. A fun experiment. (Click the Vimeo logo to see it full-screen.)

The exposure on my Olympus E-M10 M3 was 6-sec. at f11, ISO 200. The lens was at 12mm. I set my old variable ND filter at near its maximum setting, but I don't know the ND value (it's not marked & I haven't calculated it). If I eyeball my vari-ND (set near its max ND) alongside my solid Hoya Solas IRND 1.2 (4-stops), they look similarly dark.

EDIT: Details I omitted from my earlier post: The Olympus UHD video was recorded at 30p with a 1/30th-sec shutter, slowed-down in Davinci to 15fps. I set the opacity of the Olympus RAW still frame in track 1 to approx. 75%, and the opacity of the video in track 2 (on top of the still) at 50%. I adjusted levels on the Color page. A duplicate copy of the camera's stereo audio (at normal speed) was laid end to end so it plays for the length of the final edit.

On a related note, I've long wished it was possible to set Blackmagic cameras to a shutter speed slower than 1/5th sec., but alas. If BMD sold a 6K RAW "video" camera with very slow shutter capability (for long exposure stills & video), I'd be "very, very" happy. As it is, I'm only "very" happy with my Pocket 4K.

Here are a few frames from my trip to New York City, shot on the BMCC6K.

I had visited the Big Apple nearly 10 years ago and already made a video with the OG BMPCC so I wanted to do sightly different this time.
Being able to film Open Gate in 3:2 with the BMCC6K was a great experience and suited New York perfectly.
I love the frames I was able to get and I hope you do too!

I always try to put the emphasis on composition instead of movement and focused on the quiet moments with a touch of minimalism.
This was also a trip with my mum so I only filmed a few minutes each day across the 5 days. In total I shot 54mins of footage.

All shot handheld.
6K BRAW Open Gate, in 24 or 36 fps.

Hello happy clip producers.
I'm happy to share with you my latest video clip edited on DR 18.6
It's a musical clip in French (and subtitles are requestable in French to follow - for those of you who like to read French .
Paris city as a guest star in this clip with nice views of the Eiffel tower and typical Parisian brasseries and piano bars, streets and river seine. For those of you who visited Paris already, you'll certainly recognize places. For the others, this might make you want to visit the French Capital.
Enjoy and feel free to give shooting recommendations. I'm still pretty junior at film editing (2 years, 12th video clip) so any tips and tricks are welcome. Also feel free to tell me what works well so that I can keep it on my list.

Naturally 120 FPS. Why? Because I'm 120 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.

Here's the Vimeo video. Releasing to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and YouTube at midnight.

Only took me 15-beers to get this video right. Haha. Perfection meant multiple takes, and sadly I wasn't happy in between some takes with the way the glass got cleaned as there was air bubbles. Also, one beer got poured without me triggering recording! But it at least allowed me to see on monitor that I had focus and framing right, with some small corrections for the actual take. This video took three nights to completely shoot.

My memory is getting worse (getting old I think), so I started filming two years ago so I could film our trips .
...We were in North & west Iceland in februari this year, it's the 5th trip I shot with the gear I'm using now. My Canon camera and my DJI Mavic 3 drone.

Hey! I'm getting old too, and need the validation I get by showing stuff I shot with my Panasonic AG-460 S-VHS camcorder in the 90's. I used to edit on ¾" U-Matic decks then and showed it on the local access cable channel. It's cool stuff of people thinking that an old tree trunk looks like the Virgin Mary or actors doing Shakespeare improv and singing bawdy songs at a Renaissance Faire, party on dudes! I thought about scheduling showings at the library, but people show up either looking for the children's drag queen story hour, or to protest it. I don't think my stuff gets as much adrenaline pumping as modern audiences crave though. Now that Tik-Tok may be banned in the US for harvesting data, maybe I could show it here, wadda think?

I for one liked what you created. Hard to believe you just started two years ago. Well done. Only suggestion I have …it’s not forbidden to use a counter beat every now then for your cuts at different length.
Hope you two have the opportunity to make a lot more trips. I wouldn’t mind if you shared them here. Hopefully it will help you to keep track of all day reality.

Finally after 12 months of hard work and 1000 hours in the post, all around sacrifice, my first sequel of film, 35min long is coming for the private screening at the local theatre on 26th March, this Tuesday (The Backlot, Perth).

It has been graded in Resolve 18.6.5 and also I have in Resolve successfully created my first DCP, it passed QC at the first attempt, in fact I was so nervous, I created 3 variations of DCP's and had 3 USB drives just in case there is different server requirements, IOP, SMPTE and also variation of SMPTE with different surround sound config.

Proud of this project, it is my next step up in cinematography, after many years learning and researching new tech and cameras, lighting...

Not sure how far this will go and where the film will end up as I just about missed all major film festivals this year by the time I got to the end, but surely was great learning experience.'

Film utilises combination of ICVFX / UE volumes / VP tech, green and blue screen as well as some of the licensed footage was used from the stock library.

One exciting catch that may interest some here, it is in fact graded with the latest ARRI REVEAL science logC4 debayered from LogC3 2.8k ALEXA footage inside the Resolve 18.6

In this first sequel due to really dark Neo-Noir themes as well as really challenging green and blue screen keying where I left many talent underexposed partially, against projected backgrounds, I opted to shoot ARRIRAW and also I keyed all in ARRIRAW and graded in LogC4 Colour space before all graded footage was rendered and upscaled to 4k DNHR 444 for the final cut, sound is also delivered in 5.1 surround sound and mixed and processed in the Fairlight, inside the Resolve.

In my 2nd sequel that is coming I will be utilising BMCC and Pocket OG cameras for lots of run and gun scenes...

This poster is made from the single video frame, which was even downscaled to 2K...
Final delivery format is DCP 2K DCI Flat 1.85

I shot this with the Blackmagic Camera App on my iPhone 13 Pro. I also shot two shots with the Pocket 6K Pro testing the new Firmware 8.6 Beta. With that I tested transferring the files via USB-C to my computer direct from the camera without a card reader.

Edited in DaVinci Resolve. The film shots were developed and scanned at my local film lab in 30 MP TIFF files that I then edited in Lightroom Classic. I even used some Photoshop to remove some things. Exported high quality JPGs to bring into Resolve to then put into the project with my nifty Film Perforation that I built in Fusion.

I do hate Vertical Video still. But in order to showcase Portrait Style Photos on Instagram without cropping to their weird 4:5 dimension this was the best solution. Plus, they really are leaning into Reels and photos don't get the attention they used to. So it solves two problems.

I don't frame for 4:5 on a 2:3 film or digital camera. In the film camera there are no crop guides. And, my Sony doesn't have crop guides for the 4:5 either. One of these days I'm going to do a proper rant video against the lazy developers of Instagram who don't respect artists well enough.

I feel the pain. I remember when I started my full time job at an ad agency, we were still doing cool 2.35:1 'cinematic' ads for Facebook no problemo. Now 16:9 only for Youtube bumpers and the rest is primairily 9:16 with titlesafe margings that force you to place your subs, copy and graphics in the middle of the frame on peoples faces...

In March 2024 I decided to take my camera out and film some winter scenes. No real plan. Just to shoot and be outside.
This is what I captured.

This was shot with one lens, no external monitor, internal batteries and a tripod.

Again, I really enjoyed filming landscapes in that aspect ratio / Open Gate on the BMCC6K. It really fits this type of images and the detail is quite impressive in my opinion.
