Hi everyone. New to this forum and new to BM Design products. Shot my latest short on BMPCC and graded in Davinci Resolve Lite with Filmconvert plugin. The whole short was shot in raw. There is one clip in there from Panasonic GH3 that couldn't be redone in time. The short was shot for Mother's Day - started a year ago and just couldn't be done with H.264 to my liking. I am super excited about the future - both hardware and software wise. We live in amazing times. Sorry no vimeo version yet. Here's a link to film: youtu.be/_fw2TumUct0 (I am not allowed to post URLs - sorry)

Thanks for any feedback - good or bad - still learning and have a long way to go.

Hi!
I just went out to shoot something and test my new Cineroid EVF, and here it is. Pretty happy with the camera so far (BMCC 2,5K).

I stood in pretty much one spot and did some tests on the BMPC of the Toronto skyline.

Was testing the optical quality of the Cavision 4x4 ND filters and the resolving power of certain lenses in 4K. The 70-200 F4L IS was amazingly sharp but the 16-35L was softer with less contrast.

Very impressed with the detail and highlight retention of the camera.

Computer is not fast enough to grade footage in 4K in real time (need new workflow)... :(

Enjoy:

Hi,

Just wanted to share what I shot in my new BMC 2.5 EF. Everything was shot in RAW and graded in Resolve 10.
I know there are some exaggeration of the color grading. All the shots were taken using a Cheap Canon 18-55 Kit Lens.

Check it out.

Guys and Blackmagicers - I'm shooting a new children's feature film soon (on BMPC 4k - using the Samyang / Rokinon primes).

Would love for you fellow film makers / sufferers of blackmagic quirks to check out my Kickstarter for the project, also shot on the camera.

BMCC primary, with some mixed footage for slow motion (Epic and D7100). Debayered and upscaled to UHD, Red Giant Denoiser II. YouTube provided the artifacting for free.

The full film is coming out in August.

Not bad for a first effort, you have some good chunks in here, and a decent story (though the text message ending is a bit forced and kind of felt... cheap? I do have a few notes:

First off - kudos on the actress. She does an excellent job despite not really having anyone else to play off of. Her phone conversations sounded genuine, and he ticks (cracking her neck, facial expressions, etc) were some excellent choices.

Beyond that, this film has a handful of technical issues. Overall, the lighting is interesting, but the color is unbalanced - when she has the bad news call, it actually warms up - the opposite of what you would want, if any change at all. Also, all of your blacks are actually blue in the color spectrum. While this can work if they are dark enough, it doesn't seem like you crushed them enough in the color correction, so they sit in contrast to the black letterbox bars. I really noticed it when you had to zoom out on the shot over her shoulder and the pillars showed on the right and left side of the frame. I would suggest cropping the color corrected footage and putting a black slug under the clip so that at least these read as truly black.

I also think the beginning is a bit slow. A lot of these shouts could be trimmed down and still get the point across. Trim the music to match the footage - don't add more footage to cover the music. Theres a few spots where you have unnecessary shots, too - like when she pours the wine. I love the closeup, but the establishing shot is too short to feel like it fits, so I would suggest cutting it altogether. Your audience won't mind.

When there is a knock at the door - she does like a quintuple-take from 3 different camera angles, looking at the computer screen and the door. This is silly and really took me out of the story. Cut one angle, and limit this to a double take.

The camera movement - it is static (though wiggles at times) until you go handheld near the end. This was a jarring switch. Either add some handheld earlier, and/or stick to tripod for the whole thing.

Finally - the font for the title... Harry Potter style? It made it look like this was supposed to be a comedy, which it definitely wasn't. I would suggest using the same font you used for the credits - it fits the story better.

There are some nice angles and framing in this, and you should be proud of actually finishing something. Now take what you learned from this and go make the next one!

I really liked this one - excellent overall feel and style. I think the lead singer could have used a bit of makeup to cover the blemishes on his chin in the super close-ups, but it doesn't hurt the feel of the video. Really nice work!

Absolutely stunning work! The macro shots are beautiful, and the color palette is a fitting touch that winds up accentuating the gold a bit more. My only suggestion is the light-weight font in the beginning and end - it winds up pixellating in the vimeo viewer. Stylistically, its very fitting, and it looks fine blown up, but I bet most of your audience won't zoom it to full screen, so it's a tough foot to start out on.

Seriously beautiful work, though. You're going to make me want a macro lens!

Very cool! Looks like it was fun to shoot! Some of the images look a bit flat, so I'd love to see how it would look after a bit heavier-handed pass through color-correction. The bouncy music makes me feel like it should all be a bit more vibrant and contrasty, but thats just my opinion.

Well done, and enjoy the camera!

Hope you had a good view from the porch!

Yeah, the fireworks happen so fast and I think they are not that close to each other in terms of field depth, so trying to focus was a nightmare. I missed 20% of the show trying to find the right spot, so in the end I just hit record and let it go.

..also, all the cell phones were cutting off.

Would love to hear what you guys think!

Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, macro has it use and really makes this short a lot more interesting :)

Got an early preview of the finished product of a music video I shot recently for Owl City on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera 2.5K in RAW. The time-lapse sequences were the only thing shot on another camera and that was the GoPro HERO3+ because we could mount it on the hood of a car. All of it was graded in DaVinci Resolve 11, and I used the Impulz LUT package on a few of the shots as a starting point for the grade. Then there was a lot of animation and effects work done on top. All of it was edited in Premiere Pro CC 2014, animations done in Animation Creation for iPad, and effects were done in After Effects CC 2014.

When it's officially released through VEVO and iTunes I'll make the one on my Vimeo public so you won't need the password. For now use the password to check it out. Hope everyone enjoys.

I've also got another music video releasing soon. One that I gave an early preview of a while ago. Also shot on BMCC 2.5K in RAW. If you search the forums you'll probably find it.

I making a 3 part color grading series for subscribers of my YouTube channel.http://www.youtube.com/happyfoxproductions

I'm not a pro colorist or anything and don't have a TON of experience but I'm just throwing some of my knowledge out there! Like everyone else I'm always still learning and have a lot more to learn because I'm 19. I'm going to go over how I grade my bmcc FILM LOG footage in speed grade and Film Convert and how I get rid of flickering you can get when you debayer RAW images using ACR. Feel free to watch part two will be up soon :)
