Problems with clips freezing

PostSun Feb 10, 2013 11:51 am

Only just received my camera the other day and did a few test shots to familiarise myself with it yesterday. I looked at the recommended SSD list and couldn't find any on the list but got the latest version of the approved Vertex 3 a Vertex 4. When the clips play back on both the camera on on my computer the seem to freeze at certain points. I have tried in both prores and raw but the same problem seems to arise. I am missing something blindingly obvious. I have now ordered some of the approved Kingston cards from amazon and will test these when they arrive to see if the problem persists. This is the spec of the OCZ drive I bought is Vertex 4 256GB SATA III (6Gps) VTX4-25SAT3-256G. I was led to believe it was the newer version of the approved Vertex 3 from the BMCC list.

Was kind of hoping this camera would work out of the box as I have a job for it next week. Any ideas would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Vertex 4 are NOT fast enough, we used 2 on a shoot and they both dropped frames very badly, which is what is happening when the clips freeze. This happened for us in both RAW and Prores. You have to use approved SSDs

Thanks very much for that, so the discontinued Vertex 3 is faster than the Vertex 4. I shall be taking it back to PC World tomorrow. Thanks again Dave

Although the Vertex 3 is on the list, I believe we have had anecdotal evidence of problems with them. If they are discontinued, probably a good thing for BMCC users. Hope you can find an alternative on the list that is available. One of the best has proven to be the Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD. Many have also successfully used the 240 GB Sandisk as well but it's not specifically listed. If you go for the 480GB SSD, it doesn't appear to be recognized by the Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter (dock) but the 240GB SSD is recognized. Other docks such as the Voyager Q USB 3 dock read both sizes.

I've been using the intel 520 series 240gb and they have been rock solid.

We have a 120GB 520 series and ours has been pretty solid, although we get the occasional flashing record light

I've used OCZ Vertex 3s I believe, seemed fine but the transfer speeds were not as fast as Sandisk 240gbs, which I believe are far more reliable than most of what's on the official list.

It's likely the only drive that hasn't been reported to have issues, and it's not on the list. I've used them for RAW and ProRes on another camera, others have as well.

Me thinks BMD should test and then add it, as it's priced nicely and of all the Sandisk hardware I've used over the years it's never gone wrong. Currently have three (3) 240Gbs waiting for the camera.

I've ordered a Kingston 230gb v200+ from amazon and see of that works as its on the list.

I think I may go for the sandisk as I have 12 extreme cf cards for my canon c30O and have never had a problem. Thanks again for all the help. Regards Dave

Rick when you say the Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD is not recognized by the Seagate GoFlex Thunderbolt adapter (dock), is that in Mac or Win? and is that before or after formatting to EXFAT?

Good you raised those questions because that was the anecdotal evidence before firmware 1.2 and exfat was an option. Hope someone else can chime in here and clarify if that fixes the problem. But I am thinking it was on the Mac, not Windows, since the comments were from people using Thunderbolt.

I suppose one day this will become clear but when I visited Seagate's site, there was no specified limit on the size of SSDs and that irritating claim that the adapter was compatible with GoFlex drives (self-serving disclaimer of any responsibility for any other device that people will try to use).

I ask because I'm using Seagate GoFlex "Adapters" from several Seagate GoFlex USB 3.0 750GB Turbo (pictured in link below) These are very fast drives using usb3.0/750RPM and The fastest external drives available max out at 7200, Anyway they work fine on my laptop or workstation.
Today I purchased a Dual USB 3.0 HD Dock, but this needs external power,
And my "Portable" Seagate GoFlex Adapters do not, witch makes it useful to offload my media from SSD to the Gloflex Turbo 750GB drives via laptop when no power available.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention I'm using only Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD's for my BMCC

I have just used my Seagate GoFlex thunderbolt adapter and the Sandisk 480GB SSD. Was worried it wouldn't work after reading the 3rd paragraph on this website as I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro http://www.danmccomb.com/posts/2394/gea ... -ssd-dock/

Seems to work fine.

Now that's interesting and good news for some people. The previous problems related to the Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD then may have been power related. Dan McComb's blog is a must read! To cut to the chase, he says it will work directly interfaced to a recent iMac but needs more power than a portable computer's Thunderbolt might provide so he had success after he plugged it into the externally powered LaCie 2big' s pass-through TB port!
