Thunderbolt and Mini display / Français or English

I'm the happy owner of the BMCC (that I'm waiting for), and of a 17'' Mac Book Pro from July 2010... What will happen when I'll plug my BMCC to it with the Thunderbolt cable? Shall I be able to use any possibility (copy of the SSD files, monitoring... or do I have to sell my Mac Book and buy a new one?
Sorry for this question, but it seems very difficult to understand the differences between Thunderbolt port and Minidisplay port...
