OK so I don't know if this is just a weird combination of sensor size and a particular lens or what but I recently purchased a Rokinon 8mm T/3.8 Fisheye Cine Lens and was walking around the house testing out a new shoulder mount when I noticed a flare that when stopped down was not only particularly harsh but actually became a dark spot when over brighter areas. Admittedly I haven't shot much with fisheye lenses. I had a 14mm on my 5D MKIII and that was wide enough for me. But I don't ever remember seeing anything like this before.

I wanted something wide for my BMCC and got this lens. Is this a common thing to see in fisheyes or is it just this lens? Thinking about switching it out for another. Any recommendations?

It might be a dust spot either on the rear lens element or on the sensor.

If it's a dust spot on the camera's sensor, you can clean it yourself using something like VisibleDust (do not use a blast of compressed air!):

But it might just be a flare. Some lenses flare worse than others.

All canon & other cheap optics lenses have fugly flares.
That's the price of high res shooting and relativly cheap optics.

But this seems more like dust, or oil on the lens.

Agrees on both counts!

It's enough to make me keep a slight BPM on all stills glass always-- try to tame the flares.

You guys were right. I literally just pulled this lens out of the box but must have had a finger hit the glass or something and didn't realize it. That was what was throwing me off was that I just got it and it didn't occur to me that it could have a smudge. I thought it was a weird optic thing and maybe something funky was going on with the lens.

I do that sometimes... think the issue is way more complicated than it is.. Oh well.. I got it clean and all is well. Thanks for the responses guys.

I love happy endings, especially when it comes to new equipment.
