Speedgrade Workflow *SOLVED*

Hello,

I am renting the black magic camera for a two week shoot next month. I have been testing some workflow solutions with John Brawley's RAW Footage. I grade with Speedgrade and I'm having a small issue.

I have Shot 1, 2, 3 ect. I import them on a Speedgrade timeline then apply a quick LUT then output to 422 Proxy for editing.

I bring the Proxies into Premiere Pro, do an edit then I export an EDL.

I load the EDL in Speedgrade, Load the reels (RAW Footage) from the desktop but then I get a grey screen with "A File With Frame Number ********* Could Not be Found" "Error opening Clip"

Where as all I have done is pointed Speedgrade at the RAW files which worked when I first brought them to transcode.

Has anyone had this issue ? Is there a better workflow when using Speedgrade ?

Dont worry I have solved it ! I just needed to set the output on the proxies to handle "Frame Numbers" and not "Timecode" then upon reloading the reels set Default TimeBase to "Frame Numbers."

Good guy OP asks for help on forum.

The issue is SpeedGrade.

May I ask why you choose to use it?

I use speedgrade because I do not have Resolve and I do not intend to buy it. I do intend to Buy the black magic cinema camera but looks like I'm going to have to wait a few months (or years). I do however own a copy of CS6 Production Premium which included speedgrade. I have found it to be great. works superbly with CinemaDNG from the black magic and even on a lo-spec machine seems to playback fine.

Resolve Lite is free and offers up a lot of great tools. There is a learning curve though.
Speaking of curves, SpeedGrade does not have curves correct? I've tried using it, found it infuriating and lacking many features. Its a promising application but I can't help but feel like Adobe just added their name to it and packaged it with cs6. once it gets fully integrated in with the rest of creative suite and gets a much needed UI overhaul i'll stop dissing it.
And have you tried using the Color Finesse plug-in inside After Effects?

Not there are no curves but the layer system for someone used to photoshop is great. I use the numeric inputs or sliders to increase the values. I have not used Resolve extensively and Lite wont run on my 13" MBP so speedgrade is my only option until I receive my iMac (3-4 weeks time). Speedgrade is not easy to pick up and use, it takes some getting used to but it has all the features I need Tracking, Pan & Scan, Primary, Secondaries and LUT's.

I think Adobe has done a good job as it an early build and can only get better. They really need to improve the Dynamic Link as it would make workflows a lot easier. I hate After Effects and avoid using it as much as possible.

Am I right in thinking the Lite version of Resolve will only allow the use of 1-2 Nodes ? Most of my grades in Speedgrade comprise of 4-6 Layers, so if this is so the Lite version would not work for me. I do plan on buying the BMC Camera and using the full version of Resolve on the future.

The most recent version of Resolve Lite actually allows for unlimited nodes. It's basically the full version of resolve but it lacks noise reduction, 3D tools, it limits your output to 1080p (and some other stuff that I'm sure other people in this forum can add).

Here's the full list of the differences between Resolve and Resolve Lite.

get to know after effects, wonderful tool. At least give it a shot with Color Finesse. it's got curves, better scopes and monitors, but still not that clean of a UI. there are some drawbacks like playback speeds, and making sure image sequences are set to the right framerate.

I only say this because i believe you are missing out on some pretty great stuff. Also once you get your iMac download resolve lite, watch some tutorials, and enjoy. hopefully later this year though SpeedGrade is upgraded to what it should be.
