BMCC rust on bottom? On 2 camera bodies...

PostSat Mar 23, 2013 2:38 am

I recently noticed that both of my bmc bodies had what looks like rust on the exact same areas. Both were purchased at different times from different people. Any ideas? Also check yours and post up!

Notice the middle and the last 3 air holes on the right of the body. Both identical...

I'm pretty sure it's not rust, The camera is made from a solid block of machined aluminum, clean it with a Q-tip.
I bet someone man handled it while eating a sandwich and had Mustard on their fingers :D

Very unlikley! I have been the only person to touch both of them, one came out of the box with the odd color in the air vent holes. I didnt check the first i received when pulling it out of the box.

You said "Both were purchased at different times from different people" I assumed these were used.
Aluminum does not rust, But it can corrode, I wonder if the battery is leaking?

I bought them new from two different people, that would suck if it was the battery. Can anyone else check theres and report back

The last photo you posted shows the yellow colour appearing on both your cameras in the identical locations under the middle of the front of the camera and near one corner at the front, correct? I'd be getting in touch with BMD immediately and forward that photo (or a better photo showing both camera's bottoms together) as it certainly indicates a potentially dangerous problem. I've no idea if the battery could leak there but what is in that location? When you take the lenses off and shine a light in that area, can you see anything on the inside of the camera? Or take the fan cover off and can you see anything?

Do you also see any residue or discolouration on your tripod head or other mounting plates where the camera was mounted? Do you know if the mounting plate metal or metal coating is affected?

Back at the end of January when my camera arrived, I noticed exactly this... but I didn't think of it as rust or corrosion; it was a change of color in some of the holes in a specific area. It was very subtle, without shining a light on it.

I thought at the time that it was related to the manufacturing process; left over from some adhesive or fan lubricant. It hasn't changed - not one bit - in the two months I've had the camera. Nothing has leaked or been transferred to the mount or any other surface.

Within the first few moments I saw it, I decided it was of no consequence, and haven't thought of it again until now. It might be interesting to know exactly what it is, but honestly - my opinion hasn't changed. I still don't think it's of any consequence.

Why don't we ask Christine to look into it for us? Yo, Christine?

I've also noticed this discolouring in the same places on my BMCC. I don't currently have mine with me, but aren't the holes where this appears, holes that don't actually go all the way through inside the camera? If you check the holes they only go through about half way (If I remember correctly), unlike the rest of them. Maybe these holes are cut using a different method that has left some residue? I imagine the aluminium has to be cooled as it is cut and because the holes don't go all the way through, it is may be easier for residue to remain? (I may be totally off, but that's just what I have thought this may be)

Austin.

Mine also. I sure hope this isn't battery leakage.. update( i poked the holes that have the leakage or residue , it seems that holes are blocked, cause the other without the residue go all the way thru). Can anyone else confirm this?Image

No way...so odd, would really love an explanation. I would be very weary at "being ok" with it. This clearly is something that should not be there. I don't like being a beta tester :D

my guess would be some form of residue from a bonding agent or glue used in manufacturing...not battery leakage.

Just checking ours, very little traces too, but the holes are not blocked...?

I would guess it's a leftover from the milling process. The lithium battery is obviously not leaking, there would be bigger damage if that was the case.

Hi,

When the camera bodies are sandblasted, some of the sandblasting materials get deposited behind and because they are blind holes, may not get cleaned away properly. This is purely cosmetic and nothing to worry about. It's definitely not rust or battery fluids.

It's tricky but you should be able to clean it off if you find a tool fine enough to get into the holes.

not madness, more like awareness, and it is all thanks to BMD for allowing us to openly discuss their products here.

Thanks Kristian for the final word on the BMCC "Weird Stains" I'm satisfied with your explanation.

Thanks again.

According to our moderator logs, no one has ever deleted any posts from this thread... Not sure what you are referring to?
