High Speed cinema Camera

PostWed Apr 10, 2013 10:37 am

Don't worry this isn't another thread asking if 60fps or more is capable on any of BM cameras. My question is, BM saw an opportunity in the market, low cost, high resolution cameras and they are now taking the industry by storm. To me another smart move would be to create a high speed cinema camera at low cost, high resolution. Is there some technical aspect I am not understanding in why there are no good quality high speed cameras on the market at a reasonable price? GoPro dosen't count in my books as a high speed cinema camera. There must be a market for that. Im not looking for 9000fps at 4k  but a solid 150-500fps at HD that costs around $3000 or less. Not talking about rental prices.

If Blackmagic also conquers this area (high fps) for a reasonable price.. then nobody can harm them anymore :) ..
Maybe 12 Stops dynamic range 2,5k camera with global shutter and 120fps for next NAB :)

Sony NEX-FS700 seems great at the reasonable price of 7500$

Yes. But to enable 120fps 4k/240fps 2k you have to add the raw recorder (5300$) and their cards (1800$ each).

Yeah and even with the high price point, the footage out of the FS700 is good, but not great. Like I said, BM has really shaken up the whole industry. The resolution, color reproduction and cost are the new standard for entry level cinema cameras. Other companies are really going to have to lower their prices or step up their game to compete.

Given the limitations of most cameras, I'd say a 2k 120fps of compressed DNG at 15second bursts would be amazing.

And what better way to make more money than to sell a regular 24fps cinema camera and a high speed Cinema camera. I would buy both.

Not true.

Convergent Design announced a solution much cheaper than that!
We are seriously looking forward to the 240 fps 2k RAW footage out of our FS-700, that's going to be nuts!!

Correct me if i am wrong but they haven't released pricing on the Convergent Design Unit yet.
Also, This being the BMCC forum, most of us here have or are going to receive a BMCC camera which will only ever be capable of 30fps. I don't plan on spending near $10k for 240fps. But with 4k for $4k I don't see why affordable sub $5000 high speed cameras are so far fetched.

$2295 for the 7q, not sure for the rest.

Sure, probably wouldnt make sense for some, but since I have a bmcc and an fs-700 already, it's the logical upgrade path for myself and company... 15 stops of DR and all!

They have. It's less than $3000, and that includes not just the recorder but it's also 7inch OLED monitor. Another thing to remember is that the RAW coming out of FS700 would be 16-bit. That's much higher than blackmagic cameras.

People who are comparing image quality with the old 8-bit AVCHD on FS700, this won''t be the same image quality on FS700 anymore with the 16-bit RAW

You are comparing it with 8-bit AVCHD on FS700. How do you what image quality will you get from FS700 when it's shooting 16-bit RAW?
