got a job through a third party

I have been asked to use the bmcc to get certain footage for an individual who has interest from "television companies". I am not sure if this guy knows much about the people he is dealing with so I can not ask him what format they would require the footage to be in. I am assuming they want itbasically ready to go with a minimal edit. My question is this...
If unable to ascertain what format they require, what would the go to generic format be for a random television company looking to grab some footage to work with?

Example...
I am fairly certain that no tv station wants to be handed 200 gigs of dng files...

ProRes from the bmcc is broadcast quality.

indeed..10Bit ProRes is broadcast ready, just use your Vector scopes to keep your whites within Broadcast Safe area.

Or download QuickTime and embrace ProRes. I don't get why people are like, "I'm on PC, I can't ProRes" but you can, and it's nice.

I can take in prores easily enough but I cant render it out without converting it unless I am missing something. In any case I can render it as 10 bit dnxhd or any other format I need othen back to prores. Again...unless im missing something. I have quicktime.

If you are shooting footage for someone else FedEx a hard drive of the footage and they'll edit it. If they need an edited piece they should be giving you specs, otherwise you might be getting screwed over. And there's plenty of ProRes encoders for windows. But if you want to edit ProRes and export ProRes, I'm pretty sure a Flame setup will do it. Not sure about Smoke.

The individual (who probably doesnt even own a computer) is wanting to just take footage from me and get it to the people himself...I dont really care where it goes after it leaves my hands. As I will have the origional and be able to use it for promoting my abilities. However on the off hand it actually gets to a tv station that will edit it to use, I would like to make it as easy as I can for them...using yet another one or two programs or learning yet another workflow just to render prores when another format might do, seems a bit unnecessary to me. Have nothing really against prores. Just trying to find the quikest easiest way.

I would go DNxHD 145 8bit. Free codecs are available on win and mac, provided by Avid.

As it is shot with the BMCC, go 29.97 and set the codec to 59.94. As for the 601/709 vs RGB it really depends from the software you are editing on. If it is outputting in 16-235 range, set it to 601/709, if 0-255 set it to RGB. You should also put a color bar generated by your editing software.

That covers just about evverything. Perfect. Thank you. ACES color space on a 709 is damn simple due to resolve.

This doesn't sound sketchy to you? Your "friend" doesn't own a computer but has connections in the television industry? You can't get specifics on deliverables? I don't know, but those all seem like red flags to me. Proceed with caution.

I just started a small production company and he contacted me through email...so unless he wants to kill me and steal my gear I cant really see much going wrong. I can bake some copy rights into the metadata if I feel like it. No?

No not true, Sometimes many clients think a DP knows what all the terms and standards
are for Broadcast in that country,
Simple fact is if you have never been hired for a broadcast job you may have no clue,
But asking is not a crime, I asked many questions when I had my first TV broadcast job,
They will help you as long as you are honest about what you know or do not know.

Just don't lie about it, and you will get all the help you need 8-)

I don't think I'd be concerned about death or theft, just not getting paid.

If you are filming for others who want footage ProRes works and I've yet to hear about a station turning down ProRes. I'm sure DNxHD will work, but my experience with DNxHD has not been as good as ProRes.
If you do end up doing DNxHD, keep it 10 bit.

Yeah, Speed reading kills, know wonder texting laws are so strict here in Cali! :?

It was very cool, about every 6 to 10 years My dad and I would discuss it,
but the funny thing is the older we both get the more we forget, or the more the story changes,
I'm not sure after this many years what He saw is the same as what I remember?? They are the same day and event, But yet it's blended together now like the "Ninja food blender!" :ugeek:

He might not want to kill you and steal your gear, but he might want to take advantage of you. Just to be on the safe side, you should require part of the payment up front, before you even shoot anything. Then, bill the rest upon delivery of the footage. When you don't know who you are dealing with, at least you can cut your losses this way.
