Fisheye recommendation for Pocket Camera

PostSat Apr 13, 2013 10:23 pm

After watching this video shot on the BMCC using a Sigma 4.5mm lens:

I thought maybe it would be a good fisheye option with little to no vignetting for the Pocket Camera.
Only problem is that its an EF-S lens and I have not found a Canon to Micro 4/3 adapter that accepts active EF-S mount lenses...

Anyone know of a solution?

Thanks

I think a C-Mount or PL mount adapter will open up your choices for wider lenses. The C-mount is definitely going to be a cheaper adapter and options for cheaper lenses. The PL is going to be a little more substantial in cost and quality.

At 4.5mm, I wonder whether any lens that size will cover the frame. So, you might get the same end-result from a 7 or 8mm that covers the full frame and doesn't require digital cropping to remove the vignette. Of course if you intentionally want that fish-eye effect with the severe vignetting (ie for skateboard movies) then that's another story.

Basically, if you want to avoid having to digitally crop, then you want to look for lenses that will cover the Super-16mm frame. For C-mount TV style lenses, the key to look for is that you want one made for a 1" sensor (not 3/4" or 1/2" for example). Unfortunately not all sellers list or even know this information. The only problem with these lenses is that they are very small (like sometimes the diameter of a quarter). So they are not practical for pulling focus. But, at that wide often everything is in focus anyway and it might even fit in your pocket!

Here's just a few ideas from both sides of the spectrum currently on eBay:

I actually am looking for a lot of distortion. (I primarily shoot skateboarding)
Here's an example of exactly how much distortion I need:

Starting at 00:11

(Gear: Panasonic hpx-170 & century xtreme fisheye)

I wonder if this would be similar to above?

I would suspect that Fujinon being made for a 1/2" sensor you would get severe vignetting where you see a circle in the middle of the frame.

This is just a guess but I'd say if you find a lens made for a 2/3" sensor then you'll get about the same vignetting and distortion as you see in that video (ie the corners are black but you don't just get a circle in the middle of the frame).

If you get a lens for a 1" sensor you shouldn't see much if any vignetting. For example something like this perhaps... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/6 ... Mount.html

As far as distortion goes, usually but not always - the cheaper the lens the more distortion you'll get. So, in your case since you want that skateboard look, you could probably go with cheaper lenses!

This lens will make you a happy man http://www.amazon.com/Rokinon-FE75MFT-B-Fisheye-Olympus-Panasonic/dp/B005TOU804/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1366050830&sr=8-2&keywords=rokinon+8mm+micro

I shot stills with OMD EM5 and I can say that a lot of people like this lens. I never actually have a chance to play around with this lens because mainly I use gopro for fisheye shots, but this is one of the best bang of the buck.

I'm going to buy that Rokinon 7.5mm anyway but with the S16 sensor's crop it won't be a fisheye anymore...

I currently have the Rokinon 8mm for my 7D and I enjoy it but ideally I'd still like a bit more distortion without too much vig.

Thinking my best bet is still this http://www.adorama.com/FUJFE185C057.html for the pocket cam.

The Rokinon 7.5mm on the BMPCC would just be a really fishy wide angle 22.5mm
