Anamorphic zooms

Hi guys,

I got a question which I don't think has been answered before.

I got my heart set on this hawk anamorphic if it can work with the new 4k camera.

Is it overkill with the super35 sensor and is it proven to work? Does any one have any experience with this?

cheers

it depends on how long it protrudes into a mount.

I've shot with HAWK anamorphics.

They are beautiful. And expensive. And often rental only. Even if you could buy this end you'd be looking at 6 figures.

Angenieux have also just released some anamorphic zooms but they are only 2x

JB.

Have you used them on the BMCC? Or just used them in general on other cameras?

Thanks for the responses. I will look into he Angénieux.

No way am I looking to buy the lenses but rent. @ John, did you use the Hawk's with the BMC or do you think it could be done from your experience.

Thanks!

I hear bad things about those new anamorphics like they have taken everything that is good about anamorphic out of them... not the hawks but the new Angénieux announced at NAB...or was it zeiss...well listen to the new red center on fxguide.com when you get a chance they talk all about it. They had great things to say about the new cooke anamorphic offerings though.

Problem is going to be finding the 1.3x anas for the BMCC. a 2x will give you a way wrong aspect ratio (3. something to 1) and you'll be cropping the sides off. It's a pity, though, I'd've liked to throw some Lomos on the MFT version should it ever come to market.

Thanks for you answer. looks like it can't really be done then with modern anamorphic unless it's.

Yes. I've shot with the HAWKs. They are lovely.

I shot a film using Alexa (ProRes) about 18 months ago and i tested Hawk 1.3X and Lomo 2x. Have a look at the footage here.

A lot of people argue that the 1.3X anamorphic isn't *enough* of an affect. They want bigger distortions, bigger flares and MORE oval bokeh.

I prefer a lens that's optimised to the sensor. The hawks don't exhibit a lot of the more *obvious* anamorphic flares, which are accidental, but a lot of people tend to LIKE. Flares for example. The Hawks are very flare resistant, and even when they do flare, they tend to not do the big horizontal streak.

So shoot Hawks if you want more optical resolution on the sensor and some of the anamorphic look in terms of geometry and framing, but not if you want flares and obvious bending.

I find it hard to be dissing the Angenieux anamorphics considering I don't think any footage has been released.

You could certainly use either a 2X or a 1.3X anamorphic on the camera. The only issue will be the crop if you're using a 2X (which is why the 1.3X is better) and the lack of any anamorphic monitoring support. You could probably rig something up to monitor over the HD-SDI to make anamorphic monitoring work though.

I know that Optica-Elite are working on their new anamorphic set which includes two zooms. Not sure on the squeeze yet, but given that their other lenses are relatively modestly priced for their quality, they may be worth a look.
