Hi all.
Just put together a very quick hood for my BMCC this morning. I just used Black poster board. I've owned the Hoodman H700P for years for one of my old Panasonic field monitors. It fits like a glove on the BMCC. The only problem for me are my eyes. Hate getting old. I can't focus 5"s away. I need dioptics which is why I use the Z-Finder from Zucuto for my DSLR's. I've looked into several other possibilities for view finders, but haven't been able to find the one that will work for me. One of them looks great! It's made in Brazil and it have a 3x magnification but! It attaches with Magnets! Yikes. The kiss of death for electronics. The other one by MunzMachines.com looks like the perfect solution, but I haven't been able to determine if it has magnification or dioptics. For that reason, I just made my own for now. All I used as Black Poster Board. I cut it out 6 5/8's for the top and 4" for the sides. I scored it instead of cutting all the way through so it would fold without tape. Now the interesting part. How long to make it? I have computer glasses that were designed just for me for 15"s so that's how long I made it. The best way to each of you will be determined by your eyes focal length, in other words, how close can you read?. I then added two foldable strips at the end to block out additional light from the rear. Here are some of the photos if this helps.

warmly,
eric

This looks like black foam core or gator board, I think of poster board as being much floppier. I'm sure this is very effective in blocking external light. I made something similar for a 17" monitor and it worked like a charm. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Benton.
You're absolutely right. It is foam core. Thanks for the comment.
warmest regards,
eric

Use same foam core product in this hood extension and loupe combination. See around 3:45 of the this film posted in April.

Hi Chris:
Thanks for showing this. What he did was quite unique. The only problem is that you can't get to the controls, and it doesn't solve the dioptics problem for those of us who don't have perfect eyesight. I'm sure that someone will come up with a real solution. I really was hoping that Zacuto would do it. After speaking with Jens of Zacuto at NAB, count of them doing this for the BMPCC.

warmly,
eric

Actually, my set up is rigged to move the objective closer or further from the LCD, which is all the commercial products do.

I assume you're referring to the GRID 5" LCD loupe:

I assure you that you have little reason to fear the magnets used in the attachment frame of the GRID loupe.

Many popular electronic devices, such as the iPad and laptop hard drives, contain very powerful magnets. Close proximity to these magnets has absolutely no negative effect on most modern electronics, data storage systems, LCD & LED TVs, and so forth.

Magnets might (maybe) be an issue if you were to rub them directly on the magnetic strip on a credit card, or on an old CRT-type TV screen, or on magnetic video or audio tape, but otherwise no worries.

EDIT: It appears there's an important, health-related warning if you have an implanted heart defibrillator:

Eric:

Actually, if you look closely, bottom side is open to allow access as required. Even with my big hands and fingers, I can reach focus and iris button, double tap the screen, and get to the bottom side controls.
