External intervalometer for new pocket 4k?

PostSat Aug 04, 2018 11:23 am

Hi all, new here. First question:
Does the upcoming pocket 4k camera have a port for an external intervalometer (ie time lapse with stills)?
I see none on the left side in pictures.
Thanks

Nope, but it has one built into the camera. You can set the shutter for “time lapse” set the frsme rate you want, and it will crank away. Shooting Raw will give you the same DNG files, the still photo mode does. ;)

Thanks Denny.
By frame rate you mean interval yes?
If I were shooting a night time lapse I`d be looking at a 20 second exposure and a 23 second interval. Output to a video at 24 or 30 fps.

Is BMPCC`s Dual Iso applicable to stills too, not just video? That would be the collorary question in my case

Yes, but I do not think you are going to get a 20-second exposure. For something like that, you would be better off using a still camera, that can take time exposures.

I guess 20 sec exposure won't happen - at least that is not possible with the current line of BMD cameras. The longest exposure is 1/12. That might change with the new sensor of the pocket 4k - who knows?

Longer exposures for timelapse would be really great. And some kind of an exposure curve for adapting to rising/setting sun.

Robert, Is this kind of exposure curve what is used to accomplish what I've hard called 'the holy grail'? I know should know this but have never ventured to far into time-lapse. But I have a project coming up that is going to require it and am at the beginning of the learning curve.

From what I understand, long exposure is not possible with a digital shutter. That's the only kind of shutter that Blackmagic cameras use, so it's a sensor limitation.

???
So how do you think smartphones do long exposures? Or CMOS sensors in astro photography?

Maybe that might be just a sensor limitation for the dual-gain sensors. I did ask about long shutters for timelapse and they claimed it was not possible.

Certain cameras have a "silent mode" which uses electronic shutter instead of a leaf shutter, and often those modes do have limited shutter speed selections.

According to a forum I'm reading, the EM1-Mark II can do 60s using electronic shutter, so maybe there's a specific reason Blackmagic won't implement it.

Even a Red Epic doesn't go longer than one second. For longer times, they integrate up to 16 frames (frame averaging), which is either increasing sensitivity or reducing noise, but needs processing power.

Many stills cameras are using in-camera noise reduction for longer exposure times.
