Wow, that's a hefty price point! Why not buy the SSD recorder from BM instead?

I'm using one of these successfully for far less:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/CFast-to-eSATA ... m570.l1313

But it only works from the rear slot, my setup looks like this:

It's expensive, but it doesn't require a USB power source and it's a lot smaller on the camera (useful for gimbal setups, in my opinion).

I'm just...concerned about buying something like this from China. In my experience, it either works well or breaks after one use, and that's a lot of money to gamble on a possibly fragile piece of kit.

I've tried to find an eSata to mSata adapter so I can take the cable you posted and make my own adapter, but I havn't found anything for that yet.

I doubt you’d get power that way.

According to the company (contacted through ebay) it needs no external power supply.

I was referring to eSATA adaptation.

And I found out about this today - for C200, but no reason couldn't be used for a Ursa Mini.

I think it should work. Please report if you buy it.

Might not work. The other breakout cables needed 5V power to be supplied to the SSD via USB. The C200 must have sufficient power to run the m.2 cards.

But please let us know. I also found this interesting as it frees up the 12G SDI ports in the back. Great for livestream

Is there any USB connector on it for power supply if it doesn't work?

Hi Uli, i had similar setup, but work on both slot, also in dual ssd setup (i had 4 ssd) to record uncompressed raw 60p. do you have checked different sata adapter?

No, I didn't.
I needed the setup soon and since I can do the occasional uncompressed higher frame rates in combination with a CFast card in the front slot, I didn't look further. Until now it was very reliable, and I have two of those enclosures fixed on the back of batteries with Velcro, it's quite convenient.

I can also pull the SSD from the enclosure (that's why I cut off the top) and put it into an USB-C adapter for reading.

Which adapter cables did you get?

one arrive to me with UMP, i bought used, other two i bought produced from italian guy on ebay be cause are very thin to rig better with other cable. but all work fine in every slot. i can tell you that i see that startech must be first powered then connected the sata cable or sometimes ursa not see ssd box in no one slot. If you powerup and then connect, all work fine.

Thanks for the quick answer. Yes, I noticed that about powering the SSD up first.
I'll give one of those from Italy a try.

MSATA seems to need less power than a full SSD (I think it's 3 volts vs 5 volts), and the CFast adapter provides enough power for the MSATA.

I like the Solidpod design and the fact that it can use two MSATA drives so you can off-load one with the DIT without stopping the shoot.

It's still expensive - What's the cost/benefit compared to just CFast cards?

Sandisk Extreme Pro 512 CFast - $999

SolidPod: $399
Samsung 860 Evo 1 TB MSATA: $259 (x2)
SolidPod Reader: $189
Total: $1086

So for just a touch more than a 512 CFast card, you get 2TB and the ability to off-load with a DIT mid-shoot.

Add another $399 if you want two SolidPods for uncompressed 60p.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

The Italian guy is still offering the cables and he has a M-SATA solution for 80 € too.

P.S. There he is, see below.
And he confirms that M-SATA can be powered from the CFast slots, but not the larger SSDs.

Why just not to use cctech double cfast to double SSD adapter? I have it and it is brilliant, mount this between camera and battery plate and there is no problem with powering, is is turning on when the camera is turned on. It is then just a solid part of a camera. It has two short cables to both cfast slots - cable lenght is designed for ursa mini. I just ordered the second one for my second ursa mini, i was using this a year now and no problems. Ot cost arpund 350usd and you can use two ssd for 60p raw uncompressed. Here is a review:

Here's the guy from Italy!
Guys, if you want to spend ~$400 just take BMD recorder! Otherwise it's a simple adapter...
My msata solution works just fine on c200 and URSA cameras, has slim cables so you can close the screen. And I sell it under 100eur shipped.
This version uses msata ssd drives inside an 2.5" msata adapter (basically became a standard 2.5" ssd), takes power from camera, and you can have 2-3-4 msata housing to swap them on the fly!

I'm will when I'm ready to order - one question - the picture above shows a CFast adapter going into what looks like a regular SSD - is that an MSATA enclosure?

This is the setup I used when I rent the ursa mini:

Amazon listings:
CFAST eSATA DATA Breakout Cable - $56
StarTech.com 2.5" External Hard Drive Enclosure - $31
-(comes with a USB to DC power adapter)
Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III - $123

Power - Amazon listings:
Ainope
10000mAh Portable Charger - $25
-I also use this to power my Blackmagic SDI to HDMI converter at the same time on my shoulder rig

I've used this setup for over a year now with no problems. I'm interested in seeing how the NKI adapter performs since it doesn't require external power.
But I will do more research to see if I can buy an enclosure for the m2 sata and just use my current breakout cable. That way I don't need to spend $300 bucks lol

Tery, you can use an m.2 drive inside enclosure but! You still need to power it someway. In the picture I posted above you can see that the power cable comes from cfast housing, so no need for external power. Your breakout cable does not handle power, only data signals! Also, your cable has eSATA connector, you can't directly use it on an ssd or m.2 enclosure.

He can't! The cfast housing is made in a way that if you try to open it you destroy it.

Why not go straight for the M.SATA solution offered by Marian?
It will supply power and is far cheaper than the Chinese one.

Marian - Any cameras that you know of that don't work with the CFast to Sata connection?

I have a Cion, there's a Pak-adapt-CFast adaptor, and a 'Not supported in camera' Pak-adapt-eSata adaptor.

The Aja PakMedia is a priced as silly as CFast, and is just an mSata drive in a rugged housing.

I'm still wondering why BMD ever swapped from SSD's to CFast, when the cameras got larger :D

I'd love to get my hands on a CFast to Msata converter, how can I get one? CFast cards are still crazy expensive and I need to start shooting RAW 4k.

I appreciate that this is an old thread but I wanted to avoid starting a new one if possible.

Are you sure?
Dual recording cdng uncompressed or braw on same camera (I just not update over my Ursa Mini Pro)
Dual recording on dual ssd is possible with Marian adapter (I’m owner from 18 months and work fine) with double ssd.
I tested only for experiment, for me 3:1 and 5:1 are over that I need, useful for vfx to reconstruct scene and photogrammetry.
most of common shooting now are braw q0 and 5:1 and quality is insane :-)

Ps I had also pocket4k and I think is excellent sister for Ursa Mini Pro.

I use the CCTech CFast to SSD on my URSA Mini 4.6K, and is excellent. The only problem is that the door has to be open while in use, and it takes up more space on the rig.
