Broken SSD Port! Please help!

PostTue May 07, 2013 9:03 pm

So, I've had my camera since right around Valentines of 2013. I've taken it out and used it plenty of times in the woods and out in general nature hikes and walks. My girlfriend was in town and I decided to take her out to Cades Cove in East Tennessee. I keep my camera in a Mountainsmith Parallax bag at all times (it's an extremley sturdy bag and useful bag look it up). While driving through cades cove (a paved smooth road through the mountains), I decided to get the camera out on our first stop. When I went to slide the SSD in I noticed it didn't want to quite go in all the way. So instead of forcing I decided to look and see what exactly was going on. Please keep in mind I NEVER force any piece of gear I have or rent, and since I was spending time with my girlfriend I hadn't even used the camera for about 4 days, prior to that was an early morning sunrise timelapse by the lake. Everything seemed to be fine with the camera until I took it out of the bag and noticed the SSD connection has came loose, it now makes a constant ticking noise and the sensor is completly fine but this single piece has came apart. I called Blackmagic and one of the reps told me that they will not cover it, that I "abused" my camera and they will repair it with a fee. If putting an SSD in with not even 1/4 lb of energy is considered "abuse", then I guess i'll need a loader to properly use my camera! Has anyone else encountered this problem? or even heard of anything happening remotely like this?

Yiiikes. I'm sorry to hear about this man.

This is what scares me a bit about taking the SSD in and out. I've had to use some finesse to take the card out at times, and I don't like that. No eject button, Blackmagic?

wow...I find that respond shocking and unusual. Usually companies will say that it's not a normal point of failure, but they'll look at it. If they determine somethings been broken due to human error, rather than a part failure, you'll have to pay, but if it is a freak failure, you're good. Especially during the warranty period, which everyone's camera (except maybe John Brawley) is most definitely still in.

This is pretty normal procedure for many companies, but to just say they're not going to cover it before they've even looked at the damage? That's pretty disappointing.

Who's the "rep" you spoke with?

Did they give you a quote for the repair? I'd be very curious to see how much they'd want to charge you for that.

To be honest... I can't really see any way HOW this could be an operator error. Even if you "smashed" in a SSD, it still shouldn't break the connector like that - because it's the wrong angle. Very odd.

Which SSD were you using? I ask because when I had a BMCC, my Samsung 840 Pro was thin enough that it wanted to move around while plugged in, so I didn't use it. The Sandisk Extreme which I used 100% of the time was thick enough that it was very sturdy while plugged in.

This is probably what BMD thinks is the culprit. A thin SSD could in theory be forced to bring down the connectors like that. Not sure what you can do, is it just loose or is it about to break off, I cant make that out in the image.

Nope, I'm using the Sandisk Extreme and the SSD wasn't even in it when I was driving (for fear of shaking around and breaking the connection). I can't remember the name of the rep for the life of me, but even if I did I wouldn't call him out like that or bad mouth. I'm actually afraid to send it off to them and then have to pay some kind of ridiculous fee (especially since I'm selling this cam to get the 4k).

I have had a hard time removing my Sandisk 480 SSD from the camera. My fingers are a little too thick to grab it from the door, and I have resorted to some indescribable means to yank it out. I am so afraid of breaking the connector as described above. It's a shame not to have an eject button as even cheap SSD caddies have powerful eject buttons. Anyone has some cool innovations?

Just put a piece of tape or a sticker on the top of the drive so you have something to grab onto.

I would ask to talk to someone in top management if not satisfied with the rep. reply. And if I got the same response again without a service centre looking it over first, then I certainly wouldn't be buying the 4K camera from then. :o

I have the same problem. The Ssd reliever in the blackmagic has bent so I cannot load the card. I sent it to uk for a repair but have not heard back. Anyone any idea on price for repair or is it under warranty.

Have you tried opening the camera to take a better look at what happened?

I have a variation on this problem; my camera occasionally comes up with the message "NO SSD" in the top left of the screen. The only way I can get it to work is by sliding a thin piece of card in behind the SSD, but this doesn't always fix the problem & I end up having to wiggle the SSD until it makes contact. I have to say I've totally lost confidence in the BMPC4K now to the extent that I'm going to sell it, it's a nightmare turning up to a shoot not knowing if your camera will work or not!
Anyone experienced this issue & discovered a solution?
A friend of mine suggested squirting in contact cleaner, but I'm reluctant to poke anything inside, the camera that is.

SSD: Samsung V-Nano 860 PRO (1TB) - as recommended by Blackmagic, fitted with a spacer to fill the slot.
