For me, there is no other option just to hold my breath. I have lost my daily job because of situation in the world and I am sticking with Ursa 4.6k. I think this is a good time for Blackmagic Design to help out their customers and update 4.6k to BRAW.

I do agree it would be an immense help considering the current climate. I was lucky to be owed a great amount of money before the crisis from work I had done to pay off all my debts for the gear I had bought. My most recent credit card debt is a burden I'm putting on myself with no guarantee of work at the moment. Although I have faith that work will come.

Still I would love if I could use my UM4.6K as a B-Camera to the UMP G2 with BRAW instead of ProRes and CDNG. There's quite a few people around me now with Pocket 4Ks so I could always bring them on to be B-Camera operators. But nonetheless if I could do it without them and using the cameras I have that would be great. The G2 is wonderful, and matching the original 4.6K is the most ideal situation because of how similar the sensor is.

Ok that's another Camera update for today. We are in 6.9.4 and is the second one that deals only with G1. Fingers crossed for the next update :o

Based on what Tim Schumann just said:
Tim Schumann wrote:Thanks for the feedback yes that bug requires a fix at the G2 end as well so that will come through in the next URSA Mini Pro G2 update.

Thread: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=115217
I'd say more than likely the next update will be for the G2 to include the fix mentioned here plus the custom frame guides and 1:1 & 4:5 preset frame guides.

Either way, my fingers will always be crossed when I get the tweet alert on my phone that it could be the firmware update that brings BRAW to the OG UM4.6K.

BMD would'nt even bring colour science 4 for the original UM4.6k for Prores so the long held excuse by some that its limitation issue is questionable.

Re: Blackmagic RAW on the Ursa Mini 4.6k?

I was toying with trading in my UM4.6K for a Pocket 6K recently and reached out to someone who told me to keep the UM4.6K and to get the Pocket 6K as well to have it. This is someone who is super close in regards to knowledge at BMD. But I don't know if I should put stock in that as a hint that BRAW is coming to the UM4.6K.

I have the UMP G2. I love BRAW and Color Science 4 on it. I'd love if matching the UM4.6K was easier. That's why I toyed with doing the trade for a Pocket 6K. So we'll see if this final hope plays out.

After this event I'll venture to say that we should close this thread and resign to never getting BRAW on the UM4.6K if it doesn't happen with the next firmware update. I've already resigned to getting the update. But I have some small hope after being told to keep the UM4.6K...

Reason to keep the UM4.6k if you already have the Pocket 6k would be either Global Shutter enabled and to a lesser extent Braw.

Global Shutter is not going to be enabled. That was abandoned so long ago that there's zero chance of it happening. BRAW & CS 4 is more likely because the sensor was already profiled and because Blackmagic stated they'd work on bringing it to older cameras. The Original UM 4.6K is the only candidate that makes sense to do since it was teased. Still, will it? We'll find out. But abandon hope after that.

Meanwhile, based on John Brawley's statement in these forums it sounds like something big is coming. So, I'm more convinced there's a new camera.

There is about as much chance as Global Shutter as Braw comming to UM4.6k. At least GS was originally promised and actually tried based on the technology they had 5 years ago, and if they overcome the tech barrier now that may change. Although Braw was hinted it was never promised.

I haven’t missed global shutter to any troublesome extent as I don’t do fast action on the screen or fast pans. However there’s a first time for everything and this week when I was editing a singer, I noticed at one point she shakes her head very quickly from side to side (as an emphatic “no!”) and honestly it looked strange due to the slower rolling shutter I presume on the URSA Mini 4.6K. Try to test that yourself one day as you may see the same effect on that camera.

Who knows? Maybe tomorrow is an opportunity for BMD to offer another global shutter option?

You can wait for the press releases or for the newsletter which sums it all up. Nobody is forcing you to watch the stream.

Sorry and forgive me for my next comment if it appears rude?

Why the hell should BM even give a sh#t for updating a old and discontinued piece of kit!
They have there sights set on saving there company from the current world economic crisis due to Covid.
So new products, new developments, new product deals and offers etc. Not updating the old Ursa mini 4.6k.
And this comment is coming from a UM 4.6k owner.
Educate me please.

No question of the importance of new things, staying competitive and saving the world. Grant Petty is not your everyday CEO however. He’s rather special and does what he can to save his customers’ expense and maximize the life of the products he sells. He answers to no shareholder and no business partner. He conducts his business to his own high standards. We all reap the rewards of his guidance and admire him.

I forgive you.

Yeah, calling it done. Well, glad I have the UMP G2. Now, I've got to start saving for the UMP 12K G2 when that hits in 5 years since that's when I'll finally have saved the money for it. Haha.

It's a waste. All this videoisation of materials that are better as text, slows everything down. The gold standard was text at announcement. Now, I have to wait.

Got it in 2016
Used it for one production.
Just updated from original firmware assuming I had now both Braw and dng options.
Its 2023.
Very sad to find this thread and learn still not. Thought I could shoot BRAW. :(
Please BMD gods, devote some effort and give us BRAW to the G1 BMCC UM 4.6K.
I love your products and was considering even buying more,
but this is a major setback. Makes me think twice now of the value of this company.
Im a filmmaker and engineer, and have no doubt it can be done.
Reminds me of the iphone 2 that could record video but jailbroken only.
Would that be the only solution? a magic lantern type of jaibreak by some geeks?

um4.6 is a very old camera, 8 years old, with a different sensor from actual cameras (also from ump g1-g2)
bmd add braw to ump g1 but with less optimizing than other cameras due hardware processing limits be cause braw is partially debayered, tailored on every sensor.
This is the reason thatwhen bmd add other brand cameras need to update videoassist, brand need to update cameras to utput right datas.
Also cameras more younger like ump g2 not reiceved other update, and i dubt that bmd invest more money to profile and develop braw on a camera that are not selled from 6 years, and so old like hardware (you are an engineer and you know how is difficult to optimize code to speed up elaboration).
if you not have, invest few money on slim raw, a tool to convert and recompress cdng on different size to optimize your storage data in post, is the unique chance that you have (if go pro did stop cineform raw develop you could convert in cineformraw, but it's another dead product).

No. It has the same exact sensor. The internals might be different slightly but it should be in the same ballpark. The original 4.6K should be capable of BRAW without problems, at least G1 levels.

It’s not about the sensor.

It can’t and won’t ever be doing BRAW.

That might be but it should be able to do at least some sort of BRAW if BM wanted it. Its FPGA on all three models afaik and some sort of ARM CPU? (forgot the last time I looked at a teardown).

It won't ever be doing BRAW ? - most likely
It can't do BRAW? - yeah, I don't think that's the case.

When I can use two cameras for different angles on a shoot, I’m recording CinemaDNG lossless on the UM4.6K Gen 3 colour ISO 800 and BRAW Q1 or Q3 Gen 5 ISO 1600 on the BMPCC4K Gen 5 colour. In post I use Gen 4 colour in DaVinci Resolve.

Even though the two cameras are set similarly so that the False Colour appears to match, the results are not identical particularly for two items. First: The most significant change is that an actor’s red dress is a slightly different hue. Second: In post in the Camera raw tab I used a different temperature to get the look to match better. They do have slightly different dynamic range and richness of the skin tones.

But on their own each does a very good job, just a bit of a challenge at times to match them by eye. So I find the old camera still very usable as is on its own in spite of not having all the advantages of the newer camera.

After 4.5+ years since BRAW was introduced I would expect it to come to that first generation URSA Mini 4.6K. That ship has sailed.

Even in the 4-years since the UMPG2 was introduced there has been no further firmware updates for it since August 2019. So that's 4-years this August. I'm no longer holding out hope for those updates we were hoping for there either.

We'll see what BMD does next. I have a friend who just picked up a Komodo-X. We'll see if Blackmagic comes out with new models of cinema cameras using that 12K sensor with their new OLPF. I have a feeling there could be a new lineup of BMD cameras on the horizon that are not in the URSA family.

I don't think so. Blackmagic is gaining momentum in the broadcast and events market, and the pocket line is pretty much a dead alley in my oppinion.

I work in big live events and also corporate world, but have friends in the independent cinema industry. Blackmagic pockets are OK to own by the aspiring filmmaker, but as soon as there's any money, people go to rent RED or Arri (if you ask me, most of the time is just for the looks and promo social media material, unless they have a good DP using Alexa). On the other hand, I keep seeing Ursa cameras on cranes and the likes in live events and concerts.

The ATEM line has been very succesful with the explosion of streaming events, and now BMD seems to target a hybrid consumer market of traditional broadcast equipment and modern portable millenial kids. And I can totally see why they won't be putting much effort in the pocket line, there's really not much money there anymore.

They aren't going to go back and update a First Gen URSA Mini.
