A few questions about BMCC before Buy

PostSun May 19, 2013 5:59 pm

Hello,

in the next day i want to order the BMCC 2.5k camera but now i have a few questions which contribute to a purchase decision.

is it in planning for a later firmware release to record ProRes or DNxHD in 2.5k (2432 x 1366)?
because in the 4k Camera it will be possible to record 4k in ProRes or DNxHD.

will it be possible in a later firmware release to record RAW lossless-compressed like in the 4k camera?

these are the questions that are crucial for a buy for me.

thanks a lot.

best regards
Patrick

BM said that all 3 cameras will run the same firmware. So I would say YES, it will record compressed RAW.

Although Blackmagic Design has said they hope to release a future firmware for "all" their cameras that enable similar/same features (such as compressed RAW CinemaDNG & >1080p ProRes) across their camera product lines, they did not promise to do so. They also didn't specify a date or timeline. So, it may happen -- or not -- but if it does, I don't think it'll be "soon".

I wouldn't make a purchase decision based on vague statements from a manufacturer. As we've seen, even promises written on the BMD website aren't always full-filled, at least not right away.

In fairness, it's also true that BMD has added features to the BMCC via firmware updates that weren't originally promised or stated, such as support for lens IS, time-lapse, and so forth. So, we're hopeful more good things will be added to their cameras, but it's best to make equipment purchases based on what the gear can do when it actually ships, rather than on hopes & dreams.

Cheers.

In the interview Grant gave to Marco, didn't he categorically say "all three will run the same firmware".

Is that a promise? no...but it certainly sounded like fact to me.

You are correct Sean, but we may have been misled and BMD will surly deny these facts or miss quote
the videos that are obviously designed for sales and or Bogus Marketing.
