Black Magic's Film to Rec709 filter

PostSun May 26, 2013 10:46 pm

I've been shooting with my Cinema Camera since January and love it. I don't always want to: 1. shoot raw and 2. pass through Resolve. Looking into methods to shoot ProRes with Film profile, going into FCPX gives me some headaches without a quick Film to Rec709 Lut.

It hit me. With the Pocket Cinema Camera and 4K Camera shipping in a few months, not to mention many Cinema Cameras already being used, couldn't Black Magic make their own Lut filters for editors? At the very least, for FCPX? I'm not saying a quick Lut could be adapted in an hour, but I could see a lot of benefits for BMD to make their own and provide it as a download for various NLE options.

I know I'm dreaming, but it would let me shoot ProRes more without the Resolve passthrough.

Custom LUTs is in the feature request thread...make sure you add your voice there.

What about Antler Post's plugin:

Latest beta has additional features and the laters FCPX updates fixes the green flash frames.

John Brawley used it on his latest BMPCC footage.

@Adam
The Antler Post plugin you talk about isn't available yet. It looks nice, though.

@Lamberto
The FREE CoreMelt plugin looks like it does the trick. I'm not sure if its applying a Lut or just some curves to get it to look "not so flat." But I had no idea it was out there.

I'm actually testing something entirely different. If it works the way I'm hoping, I'll post a short tutorial video.

So my dream turned into a reality. The best way to add LUTs in FCPX is with the LUT utility that Denver Riddle has created. It includes the BMD Film to Rec 709 LUT without having to round-trip or process in Resolve first.

Great!

very helpful plug-in. You can also use the Resolve LUTs and others. ;)

I second Denver's plug in. Well worth the money, very helpful for a quick drop on solution. He also has a number of prebuilt grades that can be added to the plugin which are very nice.

If what you require is to apply pre-built LUTs, there is no doubt that Denver's plugin looks like a great solution.

However my plugin offers some options which are not possible with a standard one-size-fits-all LUT. Because I use the same colour processing method used internally in the camera, my plugin is able to have sliders to modify white balance and tint, and also exposure. These mimic very closely what making the same adjustments in camera would have done, and give finer control than is possible in camera.

It shows an early beta of the plugin, but this demo video gives a good idea of what can be done.

Send an email to plugins [at] antlerpost [dot] com to get a copy of the current beta.

Nick

Thanks again for your plugin...it really is great.

I had some issues with the plugin yesterday however. I had a timeline with around 30 clips in it (prores bmpcc files).

As I go through each clip on the timeline I add your LUT and then make minor adjustments and then move onto the next. As I got to the latter end of my timeline, adding your LUT to clip after clip FCP X constantly crashed with some strange plugin error. I managed to keep reopening the program to finish my edit but again I was faced with the crashing issue when it came to rendering, which meant in the end that I couldn't render the final video.

I then had to strip the video of your plugin and just render a pure ungraded but edited hq prores file instead. I then imported this one file back into FCP X and then added your LUT to the Single clip and all was fine again.

I dont know if this problem was down to my mac not being able to handle so many plugins or was it down to your plugin itself?...i just dont know. I know the best way to apply your plugin would be to add it to an adjustment layer on top of the timeline so then you only have to add it once. The problem with this is that if you want to then make minor changes to saturation, temp etc this affects every clip in the timeline.

As for your plugin...what is your recommended workflow method with it? Do you add it as the very first thing on your effects panel and then work your way down if needed with other plugins and/or sharpness, colour correction etc?
