White Balance in non-Raw modes

PostTue Jul 02, 2013 8:37 pm

Hi

This is probably a very n00b question, but I just wanted to make sure : Is there a way of adjusting white balance in Resolve if footage is recorded in the BMD Film profile (ProRes or DNxHD) ?

Thanks

With film mode material if you use the log grading controls in Resolve, the offset colour wheel approximates a white balance adjustment, and the offset master wheel approximates exposure adjustment.

The precise maths is a bit more complex (my plugin for FCP X uses the correct BMD colour science maths to adjust exposure and white balance.)

You should always set the WB in Camera, but you can adjust that in post unless your whole image is blue/orange :)

Agreed that it is always best to get as close as possible to the correct white balance in camera.

But if you are shooting in film mode you can make quite dramatic adjustments to white balance without serious degradation of the image. Have a look at my demo video (at just after 3 minutes) for an example of a 3200K to 5600K correction.

If you have shot in video mode you have far less latitude to fix an incorrect white balance.

Because this camera doesn't offer enough possibilities.

Thanks. Bear in mind the plugin is still in beta at the moment, although you can try the watermarked demo. If I can't release soon I will probably make the beta available to everybody.

But you can set it as close as possible, correcting small shifts aren't a realy problem with two eyes and a Histogram :)

Sure, but it would really be easier, if the camera had more white balance options.

Well yes, but that's a whole different question :)
