BMPCC6K EF-S Lenses?

Hey friends,

Does anyone know if the new BMPCC6K will support EF-S lenses? I seem to recall the EF URSA and old Cinema Camera supporting EF-S.

BMPCC6K EF-S Lenses?

It's super 35, which is close enough to EF-S so it should. I use EF-S lenses on all my other Super 35 cameras.

Thank you! But will EF-S lenses properly mount to the EF body? I know some EF bodies can't mount EF-S lenses at all, right? (Or am I mistaken?)

An EF-S lens won't cover a full frame sensor without vignetting and have an extra bit that sticks out the back, so it would make sense to do something to stop you mounting them to a full-frame camera but I've never owned anything full-frame so I can't speak from experience. You also can't mount them to a lot of speedboosters, because of the extra glass in the adapter.

But it would make zero sense to me to prevent the lenses designed for the size of sensor in the camera from mounting to it. I guess someone who's camera is due to arrive next week will be able to confirm it.

Got it. Thanks so much, Jeff! Very helpful. I think you're probably right that it will work then. I'll be excited to see for sure, once it gets it people's hand. Thanks again.

Since the Pocket 6K is a mirrorless Camera, the extra depth of the lens back, which is an issue on a Canon EF DSLR, should not be an issue. Not sure if the EF-S lenses have a different lens contact setup, but Focus and Iris control should be the same. ;)

I have the Viltrox adapter that does not have internal glass (mechanical and electronic adapter only, no "speedbooster" effect). It works with both EF and EF-S lenses electronically. (Not all models, though.) Because there is not internal optics, the EF-S lenses will physically mount without the EF-S rear flange hitting anything. That suggests that overall, the EF-S contacts and control system are mostly the same as for EF lenses.

Looking at the photos BM have published of the BMPCC6k, I am concerned by what the inner flange looks like - the black plastic(?) inside the metal mount ring. It looks to be very close to the contacts, and the irritating EF-S plastic rear flange sticks out past the contacts by about 3mm. It would be helpful if Blackmagic would formally confirm that there is not a physical conflict mounting unmodified EF-S lenses on the camera.

Cheers hat would be the best bet Tom. Anyone have a EF-S lens they want to send to BMD in Fremont to get it tested?
Cheers

I am also interested, if anyone tried a EF-S lens on the BMPCC 6K ? A Canon 17-55 f/2.8 would be a nice candidate for an overall good lens.

It's not a full frame sensor. It's S35 which virtually APS-C so the EF-S lenses will work fine.

While EF-S lenses will physically fit they may not be the best choice for exploiting the full potential of the P6k sensor. In short a lot of EF-S lenses are 'budget' designs and you may find performance at the edges of the frame disappointing compared to the better full frame lenses where the image is being cropped out of the central section of the lenses projected image. At least though you don't have to deal with the uncorrected optical distortions in native M43 lenses on the P4k.

A lot of EF format lenses are budget lenses too.

Less expensive lenses in the EF-S format can provide shorter focal lengths that may be more applicable to the smaller sensor size when shooting wide angles. Useful particularly for those... on a budget 8-)

You need to look at the EF-S lens options model by model. Many are cheap, kit lenses, which may be good enough, or may not be for your use. I don't have one, but supposedly, the Canon EF-S 17–55mm f/2.8 IS USM (the most expensive one Canon makes, IIRC) has great optics, for example.

I've been torn between the Canon 17-55 2.8 and the Sigma 18-35 1.8 for the last week.

Pulled the trigger this morning on the Canon because of the IS and because the Sigma is quite heavy.

If you are into run-n-gun it's a good decision, not only because of IS, but you'd have problems to keep focus at 1.8 anyway.
But for controlled shooting, the Sigma is leaving the Canon kit lens in the dust.

Rubbish.

So what is the bottom line answer? Will EF-S lenses mount on the BMPCC6K and UMP G2 (YES/NO)?

Yes on the BMPCC6K. I don't have answer about the UMP G2.

Yes, EF-S lenses mount without any problem on the UMP G1 and G2.
Just be aware that the sensor is quite a bit bigger than the Canon aps-c, some lenses like the Canon 17-55 2.8 IS vignette quite a bit more than usual and the Sigma 18-35 1.8 for example gets some funny flares off the edge of the lens hood if the light hits it right because it's in the corner of the frame ever so slightly at 18mm.

Sensor is slightly smaller than APS-C on P6k, does not vignette with EF-S 17-55 f2.8 IS or EFS 10-18 f4.5 IS.

I have seen youtube videos of the famous EF s hack. The dudes just take a pair of pliers to the plastic ring on the bottom and pop it out. WALA!! problem solved. If it's made of metal, your screwed, but most bottoms are plastic.

I had both, like Uli told canon is better for Is, sigma for sharpness (sometimes too much and I add promist to smooth a bit).
Both work on pk6 and ursa G1, G2, but on ursa you can have a dark edge on 17mm of canon, nothing of dramatic, but you should know.

I've got a Sigma 17-50 F2.8 photo that I picked up used for very little money that I love for my documentary work. On the 6KP with a monopod it delivers what I consider a very sharp stable image. Vignetting and aberration are unnoticeable to my eye. Autofocus and autoexposure have been surprisingly accurate. The two downsides that I have noticed are the camera's autofocus noise when using internal mics and the very short throw on the focus ring when using manual focus.

I have both the Sigma ART 18-35 1.8 and the 17-50 2.8. The ART lens produces a noticeable better images all throughout however I like the stability in the 17-50, of course due to the IS. The 17-50 is nice especially for a walk-about lens.

I have a couple of Tamron G2 lenses that I think would compete nicely with the art 18-35 but unfortunately are Nikon F mount and fully electronic. I haven't found an adapter that will work with them. Nikon most often doesn't play nicely with other mounts. So for now I if I want a super sharp image from a zoom lens I have to put up with Nikon color. I don't have a great feel for exactly what "walk around" means but that's probably what I'm using it for. I grab the 6KP and a monopod and I know I can get usable footage.

That just mean something you can throw in your bag or carry with you for a day of casual shooting, pretty much what you said “grab the 6KP and a monopod” and take some usable footage. :)

Here's a still grab from tonight. Given the circumstances, I'm impressed. 6KP, 180° shutter, F2.8, ISO1200, IS on, monopod.
