At this stage, maybe we will get a 1 inch sony sensored micro announcement in a few weeks, but 8k proper maybe next year.

What we do need is a open source platform using a source which will recompile to FPGA, PC, android, gpu, asic. These compile tools have been planned and claimed years ago. Then you wouldn't need to wait for a manufacturer. Unfortunately axiom open source is not such a development. So, we wait.

I did not realize the Sony E mount was license free for camera vendors to include in their camera design.

Good luck with that one. Not only is Sony technology not license free, the E mount on a non-Sony camera is Not available to anyone at this time (things could change)...
The Leica L Mount is now being used by Canon and Panasonic, and it seems to be available for use. Who knows, the L mount could be the next MFT widely adapted lens mount for mirrorless cameras using larger sensors.

Denny,
Did you mean Sigma instead of Canon? I see Sigma is part of the L Mount Alliance. Couldn’t find any Canon L Mounts.

Still waiting for that 16K 28Stops Dynamic Range live broadcast camera with integrated Wireless video with 1 Kilometer range, Wireless CCU and Talkback, 300FPS slomo, And be able to run and record a FULL day on 1 Battery and 1 Memory card..

And people tell me that i'm demanding....

Now F... Off and be happy with the 6K that has just started shipping
Sure BMD will come out with something new in a year or maybe 2. When sensors get better and more affordable so your 8K camera does not cost close to $8000...

Keep supporting BMD by buying there hardware and they will progress in building new and improved hardware. ;) I'm really amazed if you look were they come from and running the 6K game now when you realize they just started producing cameras a few years back. Where do we start. You do realise a few years ago, would be le around 2 years, you actually quoted 7 in your own post. And they started development before that, I know, one of my associates was talking with them about doing a camera, and to me about bringing me in.

Your camera spec might be doable now for $100k plus $10m sensor development. But why do you want 16k? 8k will do really well for your 720p filming Daniel?

:)

I'm not sure that L mount is going to be possible....Like Sony, I'm pretty sure it will be Leica or Panny only cameras with L mount.

Leica own it. They have long had a relationship with Panasonic on lenses and they've long done "leica branded" panny made cameras so it makes sense to partner with them on L mount. I would be amazed if anyone else gets invited to that party and is allowed to make L mount cameras.

And E mount cameras not made by Sony will never happen. Not as a native electronic one anyway.

Resolution is an easier spec to have and its great for marketing. It's a shame it's only one of many metrics that make an image amazing.

Next up is the larger sensor quest, again, something that doesn't float my moving image boat....

I'd like to see even higher bit depth and dynamic range.

Ghehehe  720P rocks man. You know that you are able to get 144x 720P shots in a 16K shot.

#getting tired of people demanding the Next K at the moment BMD just bring out a brand new camera stretching the specs and make it affordable..

I mean 8K. Buy a RED Monstro. But you also have to edit 8K.. What render farm are you going to bring..

Sure BMD will somewhere along the timeline bring a 8K camera. I mean why go big on a Atem 8k Constellation, 8K Hyperdeck, Teranex SDI > HDMI 8K, Decklink 8K.

So sure there is something going on.. And what is the point of having a 8K Switcher and recorder if there is no 8K camera. So sure there will be something in the pipeline. (Think ursa body, Maybe bigger due too cooling..)
But then there is also the 8K distribution from camera to switcher. While 12G SDI is struggling to run 40 meters on cable. 8K = 4 cables 12G-sdi, So new fiber solutions are needed to transport 8K over longer distances.

In 2 weeks IBC Amsterdam is opening.. I'm there 3 / 4 days.. Very interested to see what is going on with different manufacturers. But truly, I'm sticking to 4K at this point. There are only a handfull of broadcasters ready yet for full 4K delivery. From camera to uplink. Most jobs we do still ask for HD, But i'm glad we are 4K proof and run several jobs in full 4K. ;)

Going on the releases, I think 8k 1 inch micro preannouncement might be the only thing we see, and that is only a slight maybe. Sony last time prepared small and 1 inch consumer sensors for initial 4k consumer release. We might see Sony do that this year or next. One of the problems in the industry, is it dancing to Sony's schedule. So, Sony's timeline for consumer 8k is a real factor.

However, if we dragged our feet, my asking Sony to do a dual market prosumer camera, putting SI on cinema camera track with cineform, suggesting bayer encoding with jpeg, suggesting the spec of the RedOne (and pocket red become camcorder, come scarlet fixed, not a success, and leading discussion on cinema camera phone, and multipoint filming version, also not a success), asking the Alexa sensor developer to explore the cinema camera market, doing sensor with their different acquired technologies), Sanyo doing more manual and multi level skill level GUI (really just what Geoworks Ensemble had done previously), a camera with marketable Alexa like sensor look from BM, an oversized pocket and using Sony consumer sensors to get over any impasse to producing a 4k pocket of the original size, an encoding scheme for raw on the original pocket, heaps of improvements to android, web browsing. Not including possible direct ripoffs in 3D raytracing and web page technology. Where would we be without all that cause and effect? If you leave companies to it, you get so many worse things.

It's not having "two brain cells to rub together", it's how you rub those two brain cells together. Which is a really bad joke considering what's happening with me.

Notice, starvis and HDR. If Panasonic can put descent encoding, it might make great 4k images.

My guess is Blackmagic will build a cam with a variant of the IMX410 sensor. Everyone is doing it, and it would allow BM to build a smaller camera than their Ursa Mini Pro while still maintaining decent dynamic range.

Considering this sensor is all the rage right now (Panasonic S1H, Z-Cam e6, Sigma FP, Kinefinity Mavo LF, DJI x7, etc.) I would not be surprised if Blackmagic decides to cash in as well. Blackmagic could do something very different than the others because none of those cams offer built-in ND or raw codecs that are as nice as BRAW (unless you count prores raw). The Mavo LF is great but too expensive, so I'd love to see Blackmagic's take on this sensor.

I could say you’ll have your answer in six months, but it’s getting very competitive now with larger and smaller companies taking notice of BMD’s success and trying to defend their market share. BMD may not have all the bells and whistles but they try to standout from the crowd.

The BRAW/Resolve versus ProRes raw/Final Cut Pro struggle may be a very important piece of BMD’s future success. At this time Apple isn’t pulling any punches. Their next uppercut is coming shortly when the newer Mac Pro will offer hardware that accelerates their already fast codec. BMD has had good relations with Apple but obviously Apple isn’t doing anything helpful that will detract attention away from ProRes raw. However in the game of chess, the side with the most pieces in play doesn’t guarantee a win.

Are you sure that Sigma is using the same sensor in their pocket dng camera as the zcam e6. That would be good, as it means the Sigma 12.5 stop claim, is really easy stops (usable).

The Sigma fp has the L-mount too. I think they are encouraging others to adopt it.

Maybe not so much?

Check the FAQs on the L-Mount Alliance site:

https://l-mount.com/en/Q-and-A

They indicate that:
  • The L mount specification is considered confidential and is only available to members of the alliance.
  • The alliance is not "completely open" - they might consider allowing other partners to join if "certain conditions are met" (but no indication on the site as to what those conditions are...)

Of course, such things are discussed behind a curtain and not in public.
But the fact that Sigma joined, who are mount-agnostic regarding lenses, but had their own sensors and mount until now, might have something to say. They have even announced adaptors. Heck, there are adaptors for PL too! If BM wants to go 135 full-frame, I think they should try to join!

I think Uli is right.

L mount is owned by Leica. It’s not a consortium like MFT, where they are all also members.

https://www.four-thirds.org/en/contact/group.html

It’s strategic that Panasonic and Sigma who are already parters with Leica on other projects are the L-mount partners.

Like Sony with E mount. Any lens maker can make E mount but notice no camera maker can make an E mount camera. That’s the way they want it.

I don’t think Leica are in a huge rush to make L-Mount into an open consortium.

My hope is for a 6K camera with some kind of universal mount. Being stuck with EF on the 6K is a real pity. Then the things that need to be improved are:
1. battery system
2. fixed screen
3. image stabilization

6K already takes up a lot of disk space but as we go forward with a wide adoption of 4K for distribution, a 6K sensor is required, 8K however will just require more hard drive space, more rendering time, and will result in no imrovement in your 4K master and is insufficient for an 8K master which we are still far from adopting.

So 6K with a universal mount and the above mentioned improvements would make for a near perfect camera.
Cheers,
Damien

Still, that is possible. Anybody got a 100 mil to fund me... I thought not. I'm not looking at km wireless, or 300fps, but have a design proposal otherwise above that spec for advanced imaging. As for 16k, I was working out last week, how it could be put into a phone in a size smaller than the older small iPhones using conventional flagship chipsets (whenever they get to 16k, if they ever do in a way that video can be used on). It's simpler with less new tech than the other designs, so is worth tossing away to a company and lossing rights too, but it is not a priority.

Boy, so much could be done now with something as big as the current pockets.
