2.5K Lens Question

PostThu Jul 11, 2013 3:09 pm

I'm looking for a prime lens to do this kind of shot (interview):

What is the correct focal length in MFT to use for this? Is f3.5 about the fastest I want for interviews?

Thanks!

What is important to know is the distance you want or need to place your camera from the subject. What do you consider an ideal camera to subject distance for a talking head? Some people might say 5' or 7' or 10'. Tell me your distance and what vertical height you want on the frame and I'll tell you the ideal focal length of the lens on the BMCC.

For example: at a camera to subject distance of 10', a 50mm lens will give you a vertical frame height of 1.8' which is fine for the first talking head in your illustration. A 35mm lens will give you a frame height of 2.5' which is closer to the other talking heads illustrated. If you move the camera closer, your frame height will decrease proportionally, so at a distance of 5', the frame height with that 35mm lens is 1.25'.
