Video Assist -- BRAW

PostSun Sep 29, 2019 10:56 pm

I understand that Blackmagic Video Assist devices have begin to feature BRAW as an option. Will this work with a RAW output from an FS5 / FS5mk11??

I believe the only stated 3rd party cameras are the Panasonic EVA1 and the Canon C300 II

Thanks Note.

Do you know which BMD cameras will be compatible?

At the present, none of the BMD cameras can output a Raw signal, except for the UM Pro which sends a Raw feed to this accessory SSD drive. BMD has not said if the new VA’s will record Raw from the BMD cameras, and given the VA uses SD cards, their is no advantage over using it instead of recording a Raw internally to the camera’s own CFast/SD cards. The cameras selected to work with it so far (Canon C300 and Pana EVA1, can not record Raw internally, so having an external Raw recorder is a good fit.

Hello again...

I have an FS5mkii, and I'm wondering what I can record on my 5" 12G Video assist via SDI. I know I cannot record RAW, but can I record 4K or UHD in Prores?

Yes, if the camera can output the required resolution video signal. The VA 12G will accept and record:
SDI Video Standards

SD Video Standards
525i59.94 NTSC, 625i50 PAL
HD Video Standards
720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60
1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59.94, 1080p60
1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080PsF30
1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

2K Video Standards
2Kp23.98 DCI, 2Kp24 DCI, 2Kp25 DCI
2KPsF23.98 DCI, 2KPsF24 DCI, 2KPsF25 DCI

Ultra HD Video Standards
2160p23.98, 2160p24, 2160p25, 2160p29.97, 2160p30, 2160p50, 2160p59.94, 2160p60

4K Video Standards
4Kp23.98 DCI, 4Kp24 DCI, 4Kp25 DCI
According to the BMD specifications page.

The limiting factor is what the FS5 will output via SDI, doubt is it a 12G connection. It’s Sensor Resolution is Actual: 4096 x 2160, but Effective: 3840 x 2160, or UHD, so no 4KDCI output. I found this limitation on the FS5 in a review:
As it is, the FS5 limits you to only one live output from either the HDMI or HD-SDI output, regardless of the resolution. In QHD mode, you can output a 2160 30P signal from the HDM

So DDI is limited to HD, but you can output a UHD signal via the HDMI connection. Hope this helps.

The original non pro 4.6k mini also outputs raw via sdi to the ssd, given that the camera only has cfast card as the recording media that would be a welcome option but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. It uses both the sdi out and in on the camera so I would imagine the video assist hardware would need to have been designed with this in mind which may not be the case.

I understand all URSA Mini including the original UM4.6k output RAW over SDI for SSD module.
The new Video Assist 12G HDR can record to SSD via its USB-C port so there is advantage for older cameras that don't have a USB-C output.

Yes and no, they used both the SDI out and SDI input connections to do a CDNG RV output to a specially co figured external piggyback SSD recorder. This setup only worked the the BMD accessor recorder.
You can not feed this “raw” signal to N.Y. other recording device, so while technically correct, is not the same as using a single SDI connection for a general use Raw output that could be recorded on a VA or similar Atomos recorder.
