PC CPU Upgrade Advice

PostMon Dec 04, 2023 10:04 am

Hi, I'd like to ask a few questions about upgrading my current desktop PC.
My current build is in my sig, but basically I think I can upgrade the CPU / Motherboard and re-use everything else. I will have to double check my PSU next time I open my case though.

I'm looking for the best "bang for my buck" upgrade, since I want to keep costs down.
I don't need the best, just a significant upgrade.
So, I'm thinking intel 13th gen CPU. Probably the 13700k.
Or do you think the 13500 would be enough? I'm unsure about how much real-world difference there is between the 2.
One thing I am quite confused about is the motherboard. Is there anything specific I need to look for in a motherboard besides form factor and socket type?

If anyone has any specific recommendations or general advice, that would be great. Thanks.

13600k may be overkill for Resolve unless you do a lot of Fusion heavy stuff. Look at the Puget tests.

https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/artic ... lve_Studio

That covers both generations. The I5 chips are about 5% overall slower in the tests. If budget is an issue put the money into your GPU.

Things to look for? Storage. How many NVME slots. Ports? Some higher end boards will have TB4.

You'd hope that more expensive boards are better built but if you're not overclocking likely not an issue.

Cheapest way to go upgrade wise would be to plop another AM4 CPU in that motherboard. Zen3 is plenty fast for Resolve.

A 5900X or 5950X would be a significant upgrade from that 2700X.
Or even a 5800X3D if you do some gaming on the side.

You also need to upgrade ram. DDR4 to DDR5. 13th Gen loses a lot of its speed advantage if you go with a DDR4 motherboard.

A 7700X is a very good choice vs 13th gen. Same-ish speed wise but significantly lower power consumption. And if you use it a lot and render a lot it starts to matter.

Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I would rather upgrade the AMD processor actually, but the reason I was thinking of switching over to intel is because of Quick Sync.

The h.264/265 decoding seems like it would be very useful since I mainly shoot with Sony mirrorless in those formats.

Primarily Sony 10-bit codecs here as well, and the 5950x has no problems. Regularly do UHD multicam on v18.1, not sure about newer versions of Resolve.

Many years ago I excitedly replaced the Intel 8088 CPU in my IBM PC with a NEC V20, a pin-compatible chip that executed instructions about 10-15% faster. That's when I learned an important lesson: performance differences of less than about 20% can be measured, but they're too small to notice in regular use. And that's especially true when the change in performance is affecting only one aspect of a system in which there are multiple bottlenecks (CPU, GPU, I/O subsystem, memory constraints, etc.)

From many years I upgrade gpu instead of cpu, I add a second (third) gpu instead to change cpu.
Why? I do mainly resolve work, after effects a bit, most of other work is render3d with octane and redshift. All software use mainly GPU to render (ae is weak on cpu and gpu ).
Against many other people that I know, I have fast machine with less cost in the time.
Like someone told before me, check the speed you need, check some benchmark like puget and try to see what give you real difference in speed.
I never use h264/h265 videos, If I need, I ever convert to CF, ProRes or dnxHr, and all fly.
I usually work fine with raw until 6k and 8k without problem.
