DVR 18.6.4 Studio update borked my system, reverting failed

PostWed Dec 06, 2023 11:11 pm

I updated from 18.6.3 Studio to 18.6.4. After installing and rebooting as requested it hung on starting DVR. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling after downloading again in case I got corruption on the first download. Same result.

I uninstalled again and installed version 18.6.3. It won't play any video clips on the timeline or left view on the edit page.

UPDATE: DVR 18.6.4 Studio update borked my system

PostThu Dec 07, 2023 2:50 am

I updated my bios and installed the latest GPU drivers. I still can't play anything on the timeline. I did a full system backup. Tomorrow I'll check back here and if no solutions have been suggested I'll try updating my OS to windows 11 PRO.

That sounds pretty bad, I downloaded the update but did not install it since I didn't want any surprises in the middle of the project I am working on.

Here is something that fixed a lot of my DR problems awhile back.

1. Uninstall DR
2. Create a new temporary user in Windows 10
3. Sign out of your current user account and sign into the new Windows 10 user account.
4. Install DR
5. Try adding something to your timeline now.

I got to where DR wouldn't play anything as well and those steps worked for me. After I got DR working again, I then backed up my database, restored it to my new user account, moved over all of my assets (LUTs, transitions, Fusion effects, etc.) from my old user account to my new one and have been working perfectly ever since.

Something in DR got so hosed that it got stuck in my user profile somewhere, uninstalling and reinstalling did not fix it, only a new user profile fixed it. I probably could have eventually found the folder or setting that was saved somewhere, but it was faster to just create a new user account.

Awesome, Thank you for the idea, might try that. I'm going to take a look through the registry and see if I can spot a conflict and resolve it.

Personally I think it was in one of the user profile folders, DR leaves quite a few behind when you uninstall it. Thinking about it, I probably didn't even have to uninstall it, probably the new user profile would have fixed it. Before poking around in the registry you might want to just try switching to a new user account and adding a clip to the timeline, at least that way you will know for sure its a profile thing.

I am avoiding W11 like the plague since my W10 system is running so smoothly so if I were you I'd try to get your W10 working again.

Hmmmm.

I've never had to reboot after an update. That makes me suspicious.

Re: DVR 18.6.4 Studio update borked my system SOLVED

PostFri Dec 08, 2023 1:05 am

OK, I got it working. Thank you for the suggestions.

I tried a few things but since I have been having issues for a couple of weeks with app updates failing and causing all kinds of issues I decided to move to Windows 11. This seemed to fix the timeline not playing issue and allowed me to update to the newest version (18.6.4).

It definitely takes some getting used to some of the changes, they simplified some things but made deeper level controls much harder to get to. My system does seem to be faster and more stable on windows 11, so not all bad. I am not sure why my Windows 10 was causing issues. Some might say this was a plan by MS to "Encourage" people to update. Regardless, it's all working now and I'm back in the groove.

Thanks again everyone.

That's good to hear. I'll continue avoiding W11 for as long as I can and I still have the installation media in case I need to reload my whole system with W10 again. It sounds like maybe the codecs got messed up somehow, that will break your whole OS pretty quickly.
