bug (18.6.2) "stop render" doesn't stop render

PostFri Oct 13, 2023 3:09 pm

win 10 (19045.3448), 18.6.2 DR studio, 128GB RAM, M.2, 3960X, 3090 (537.42)

steps to reproduce
- take a 12k (prores) piece of footage, make a 12k timeline
- apply basic color correction
- set render to 12k dnxhr
- send to render
- watch the render to progress very slowly (vram overflow bug, 20+h render time for 2min of footage)
- hit cancel render. box will say "cancelled" in red
- DR stays unresponsive as if it is still rendering
- quitting DR will give a "do you want to cancel rendering" prompt
- quitting DR is the only method to continue

Bug reports should probably just go in the regular forum, rather then Feature Requests.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

well, technically, a bug to be fixed is a future feature?

Resolve always completes the current clip that is rendering before the render stops. Could this be your issue?

I wish they kept the Bug forum around.

stopping a render midway should stop it cold. (and not maybe later).
AFAIK, stop always meant stop now, which is why this is puzzling that it claims it has stopped, but it kinda thinks it is still going...
anyway, it's a bug, not a feature...

Every version of Resolve has always operated this way, it's not new and not a bug.

I am glad to have it filed under feature requests then.

Although I am still unsure if DR behaved like this prior to 18.6.x... I think I remember that I had stopped renders before they were finished without said problem in prior versions.

this is just about Resolve not being responsive when it is overloaded, so yes unfortunately quitting is sometimes the only answer.

So if I sit and wait will it gracefully stop rendering and leave a valid moov atom at the end of the partially rendered file? Asking because I want to know if I should reach for the killall hammer.

Looks like a bug. Acts like a bug. I'd say it's an annoying, time-wasting, money-costing bug. Particularly because there's no separate render ap, so the resolve seat is tied up until you either rage quit or it finishes whatever the hell it's doing.

It ain't new, but I'm skeptical it's by design.

There are two desirable behaviours:
A: stop working on the current frame, dump whatever frames are fully rendered to disk, write the moov atom and close the file, so that you have a valid movie file of the rendered frames so far. Bonus points for creating a new render queue item with the in point set to the next frame. This is what AE does, and it seems like a pretty rational thing to do that is kind to users.
B: Second is to just throw its hand in the air and stop rendering immediately, no closing the file, but letting the user regain control of the ap. Not so friendly, but at least the user can take the L and get on with their life.
Resolve chooses:
C: none of the above, just carrying on doing ...? ... something ...? until the user quits Resolve. No valid movie file, nothing. Bad time guaranteed.

Actually there is an even better option: make rendering a non-modal process, done in the background, or by another app (a command line app would be super useful, because it could be linked into custom toolchains like doing useful things with the rendered file. I do this with aerender, e.g. once it finishes I get ffmpeg to transcode the result and send the mp4 to frame.io then send the machine to sleep to save electricity).
