Projects disappeared from Project Manager overnight

PostWed Feb 28, 2024 6:24 pm

So yeah, my project manager this morning is blank.

Some weirdness happened on my Mac last night (spinning ball, could not be force-quitted - had to force a shutdown) it was not clear what app had caused it or why but it was not any weird tinkering with file names or anything in the Finder on my part.. but this morning Project Manager is empty.

When I go looking all of the projects still exist but they are in the hidden folder inside the Users folder - how do I reconnect/refresh the project manager when I can't show a hidden folder?

All of my projects seem to be listed under user 'guest' - it seems I'd want to 'add user' and then add this but how? - I don't want to call it 'guest' in case it overwrites the one I can see with all my projects in..

I've read a bunch of forum posts but none seem to be addressing this particular issue.. terminology is important I've noticed and I'm not sure what I should be doing 'restoring the database'? - as I said the projects all seem intact it just seems to have lost connection with them.

What type of project library, Local or Network?

What do you currently see in the Project Library list?

Local Database would be the default Local project library. If you haven't created any additional project libraries, I would assume this is where your projects should be.

If you see Local Database in the list, right click it and select Reveal in Finder

What does that do?

If it was working, in Finder you'd see a Resolve Projects folder at the top, then a Users folder, then a guest folder, then a Projects folder, and in that Projects folder would be a folder for each of your projects, with the project name.

Do you see any of that?

See attached

Yeah it all seems intact - I've never created a database anywhere other than DR's default location and I'm not using external drives

Thanks for your help

If you expand the Resolve Projects folder in your last screen shot, what do you have in the Users folder?

Expand all the folders under Users, and look in any Projects folders you see. Where are your projects actually located?

This is the entire folder called "Davinci Resolve"

The path to that folder I posted above, directly below your first response

Then press <COMMAND> and <,> (comma) to bring up the Resolve Preferences window.

Select System - Advanced

Assuming there is only one line there, delete it, and save the prefs, then restart Resolve.

Are your projects there now?

Open Finder. Navigate to /Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve

Double click CaptureLogs and then send the Davinci-Resolve-logs-xxxxx.tgz file that gets saved on your Desktop.

OK. Back in Finder in the Users folder, trash the Admin and the f4bxxx folders, then restart Resolve. Now are your projects back?

Did what you said but it seems to remake the 'f4b6594c-dc8c-4298-97f3-ab70f07ea157' user and presents me with the same dialogue box when I restart

Please try trashing the 'f4b6594c-dc8c-4298-97f3-ab70f07ea157' folder again, and this time, empty the trash, then restart Resolve and see what happens.

I did the first time but did it again and now it won't open. I get the DR splash and then it fails, doesn't get as far as the project manager just stops trying to open.

Please send this file:

/Users/simongarrett/Library/Preferences/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/dblist.conf

/Users/simongarrett/Library is a 'hidden' folder.

To see hidden files/folders in Finder, simultaneously press the <COMMAND> and <SHIFT> and <.> (period) keys.

Also double click CaptureLogs again, and send the updated .tgz file.

Rename the guest folder to guest.tmp, then see if Resolve will start.

Assuming it does, it will have created a new guest folder, that will have no Projects folder in it. Start a new project, and save it. That will cause a guest/Projects folder to be created.

Then, copy all the project folders from the guest.tmp/Projects folder, into the guest/Projects folder.

Restart Resolve and see what happens.

When I did that it made a new user called 'guest' and ignored my renamed folder..

I trashed it and restarted but it's back to failing to open

HI, I have a very similar situation.

I built my Project Library using my external SSD. Today out of the sudden I cannot see my projects.

I checked the projects was there in the SSD but I cannot see it in Davinci Resolve.

Is there anyway I can have it back?

How is your SSD formatted?

Can you see folders on the SSD with your project names? And are there Project.db files in those folders?

If so, if push comes to shove, you can likely manually copy them to your Local Database Projects folder.

But, assuming there is a valid folder structure on the SSD, you should be able to Connect to that Project Library from the Resolve Project Manager page using the Add Project Library button, then selecting the Connect tab.

Having a Finder or File Explorer screen shot of a details view of the SSD path to the project folders would be helpful.

The main problem with putting your project library on an external drive is the drive may connect with a different drive letter (on a PC) or a different /Volumes mount point on macOS.

At that point Resolve won’t see the library and it’ll look like your projects have disappeared.

The best fix is to unmount the drive and remount it with the original drive letter or /Volumes folder. The second best fix is to tell Resolve the new location by using the Connect command in the Project Manager’s left panel.
